Hi all,
A few shots attached of todays Learn to Windsurf morning session conducted by Richard Scarr at the Royal Yacht Club.
He had 12 teenagers plus a few parents turn up at 9.00am in 11degrees. I was most impressed with the way he conducted the whole training session, excellent tuition with all the participants biting at the bit to get on the water. He had two rubber duckies manned by young volunteers to collect those that ended up outside the bay. Everyone was involved, either on a board or in a duckie. Every participant enjoyed some measure of success.
I was staggered at how keen these young kids were to have a go and get in the water on such a bloody fresh morning. He also had a sausage sizzle cooked by a parent for the kids when they finished.
He was also to hold an afternoon session for adults. Don't know what the interest was there as I didn't stick around.
As Richard is state sailing coach (with a rich background in windsurfing and running windsurfing schools in both Europe and Sydney) it is a real bonus for Windsurfing Tas to have him keen to promote our sport.
Both Richard and Murray Jones (vice commodore of RYCT) who also turned up, are keen to offer windsurfing as part of the sailing school program run at the club. This school regularly attracts 100 plus students on Saturday mornings during the sailing season.
Therfore they would ideally like to have the three training boards normally stored at SBSC stored in the sharpie sheds at the RYCT so that they are readily available for kids to use. I think this option is a fantastic opportunity to increase youth involvement in our sport.
Guess there needs to be some committee discussion again on this issue.
As previously agreed there was a charter fee paid for the use of the boards today.
