Hi all,

Just wondering if the north coast wave comp is still going ahead over easter?

Cheers,

I think that we need to nominate someone who is twiddling their thumbs at the moment - someone who may be on holidays, between jobs, desperate for a sail, less than 5'8" - to monitor all of those websites that claim to be able to make long term predictions about wind.

That person could also be charged with finding the appropriate venue(s), close enough to home for those with other obligations to be able to day-trip and get involved.

I wish it were me - imagine the kudos!!!!!!!!!!!

Can anyone think of someone who matches the description?

Can't be Greenie he's got his thumbs up is a.se, never has time for holidays, says he's desperate for a woman not a sail, we're not sure what websites he looks at and he's only 5'2".
The best venue he could find would be his bath and he'd be asking his rubber duckie who happens to blow a little wind there are no obligations you can leave anytime and go play with your mates by the sea .

As usual Houston you are overcomplicating things, Not surprising from a man that can't turn a decent crash into a forward loop.

1. wait for a 25 to 30 knot forecast occurring in the next couple of days (forget about 5-6 day forecasts they are useless at this time of year)

2. Arrive at the beach and run the contest.

Take Al's advice I reckon - wait and see.

Bellbuoy is always going to be the safe bet for wind, especially south of west, but the smoother waves, if there are any, tend to beckon from Bakers. The forecast has been shifting over the past few days too.

I say - BE PREPARED - for whatever the weekend brings!

On a more positive note - Greenie and I got a couple of hours on the water last week, and after four weeks of callus-picking (we're all doing it) even the flat water of Kelso was a HOOT. Bit sore the following day...

Mental note - lift some heavy stuff this week...

Looks like there will be some wind this weekend so as per the WT calender and we will attempt to have a comp. Bell Buoy will probably be the best bet either on Saturday or Sunday but we will have to watch the forecast and make a call no earlier than Thursday at this stage for location and day/times. I know a few of the locals are keen but an idea of numbers would be good. Paul

Like all WT events, you need to be a WT member. A social member for $35 allows 1 event, or a full member (all events) for $50.
Don't think I can make it, good luck fellas if it happens. Light it up.

So a single event entry is $15 for a non member?

Here is the link to the last southern contest.

The forecast is still evolving but at this stage I would be calling Friday simply because it is the windiest day with the biggest swell. I like the fact that is got a bit of north in it early in the day. Saturday could be good too as it is often more westerly than forecast in the afternoons.

It would be good to here what Greeny and Geoff think as they spend the most time at the wave beaches.

Its always going to be a bit of a gamble as we get no thermal boost to the wind at this time of year.

Well since i am now the font, and since Greenie is going to a wedding this weekend ("L") I would say that the current forecast implies Bellbuoy.

FRIDAY is currently showing a ramping up, quickly, from stuff-all to 30 knots, westerly, but not until 1.00 pm - I don't think that we can bank on this as these wind increases tend to be later than forecast.

SATURDAY is showing 30 knots SW at 10.00 am dropping to 24 knots WSW by 5.30 pm, but WSW most of the day - clearly the more likely option at this (too) early stage.

SUNDAY is currently showing a dud.

If the Friday ramping up to 30 knots occurred early (by 8.00am), Bakers might be a good spot to sail, as per Mitch's preference, but the chances are slim, it requires a Parks Pass, and it is a long way from any other venue. Let's leave it on the table for now though.

It appears that there is going to be wind, we just need to be prepared to be responsive to what that wind does come the day. Bellbuoy is always the safe bet as it is well sailable from NW around to SW, and this is essentially what is forecast. It is better on a mid tide, and can get fluky in close on a high tide (2.00pm Friday - 3.00 pm Saturday), but that's the way it is.

Cross them - all of them!

Guys,

I think the wording has changed from season to season and as a result it has evolved into something that is not entirely clear (or completed). The 2013-14 AGM minutes describe membership as:

Competitor rate: $50 covers AWA registration, third party insurance and free entry to WT events (excluding those hosted by Yacht Clubs)
Social Rate: $35 covers AWA registration and third party insurance.
Junior Competitor rate (up to 18): $25 covers AWA registration, third party insurance and free entry to WT events (excluding those hosted by Yacht Clubs)
Single Event Entry Fee: $10 for members of other AWA affiliated associations
Single Event WT Membership: $15.00 for Social members of WT
Single event entry for Juniors: $7.00?

However, on the membership form Social Membership for $35 includes entry to one event, which is not the way it reads above. I recall the logic being that social members did get access to one event free, but then it would be $15 each event thereafter, making the competitors membership more economic if you thought you might enter more than one event.

Prior to this I recall membership was a flat $35 and $10 per event for everyone, but it was often tricky collecting the money at events, so we just included the $50 rate.

Notwithstanding the clearly written statement "Single event entry for non members $15 ($7 junior)", I would interpret this to be "single event entry for Social members $15".

At $15, WT would lose around 8 per person if needing to cover insurance and AWA affiliation ($20 and 43, respectively). If anyone wants to exploit the mistake and pay $15 entry as a non-member, perhaps WT will just have to take the loss on-board?

Anyone else have a view on this?

The non members I thought was non WT but an affiliated club from the mainland.

Fundamentally
You need to be a WT member to enter WT Events (or affiliated club such as windsurfing NSW)
Part of the reason is the insurance costs, which is done on a yearly arrangement with the national body per member.

So by paying $50 you get open slather, including the liability insurance.
By paying $35 u get the basic insurance, and 1 free to try an entice you to $50.
This also includes a registered Australian sail number

As mentioned the wording is not in our favour, and will be reviewed prior to next season.

I think $35 including 1 event entry is fine... That's always been my understanding.

As you said Dave - each event thereafter is $15 to make full membership more appealing.

Felix,
you can register on the Day,
Someone should print some forms up for those who are thinking the same and nominate someone to collect fees /forms etc.
As long as you have paid, filled in and signed the form then your result will count in the comp.
Non-members can not enter.

I will be around this weekend.
From experience, it's better to wait until about 2 days out from what was forecast as the best day.
At this stage Friday looks to be strongest day. But as we all know fronts can slow down or speed up throwing the forecast out by sometimes 24h. I would make the call Thursday after the 3:15 report and Bom's 4:05pm report. I find bom is more reliable.
But, I won't be here on Friday, so I hope Sat is the go!!!

Just one other thing.
I would pick Bell Buoy also.
As Geoff mentioned, it's the best option for NW - SW winds.
Don't think it will be strong enough for Bakers.

So as i understand it

If you want to compete this weekend in the comp it will cost any non WT member $35.00 to enter. You can join on the day as I will have forms available.

If you are a social member and haven't competed in any events this season it is free to enter.

If you are a social member and have already competed this year then it will cost you $15.00

Full members are free to enter

Greenie could you text me your number as I would like to liaise about conditions and timing..Paul 0417326733
