I've been looking at the coast around Devonport for some time, noting how good it looks in a summer seabreeze.

Sunday brought a stiff sea breeze, and I did the stretch from West Ulverstone to Moorland Beach/ Wesley Vale. With long beaches and a fairly forgiving and populated coastline, this stretch of coast is perfect for summer downwinders in a NNW breeze.

I had a 6.6m up, which was at its limit with the wind gusting to at least 30 knots (Devonport Airport). I covered a bit over 25km on this one.

Penguin to Port Sorrell would make about 40km I reckon.

Clarence, I would be keen to do the Penguin to Port Sorell downwinder sometime. I grew up in that area (Ulverstone) and my father now lives "waterfront" on muddy creak in Port Sorell in his retirement. I make it 50km from Penguin to his doorstep @ -41.170451, 146.546168. It would be great to sail that stretch of coast in a seabreeze. I would probably just need a day's notice and would make the trip up from Hobart to do it. Would be ideal to have a high tide at the finish so it is possible to sail all the way up muddy creek (to waiting shower and refreshments). I would need to do some "one tack for 50km" training though.

Get a few ocean kilometres under your belt and we can give it a go. If you weren't up to 50km we could start at Ulverstone. If it all gets to be too much there are potential pull out points all along the coast. It is even possible to pull into the Bluff at Devonport for some refreshments on the way.

I am considering a potential trip down the east coast this Sunday to do Boltons to Swansea. I will see how the wind shapes up, but at this stage it is looking good. I'll let you know how that is looking if you want to come along.

Unfortunately can't make it this Sunday (racing Tamar River to Port Sorell and return on a friend's yacht) but normally would be keen provided the logistics (wife and kids) are solveable! Tim
