I'm looking at moving to tasmania early january and just wondering what size sails I should bring with? I have sailed for a couple of seasons now in wa and starting to get into the waves. Looking at mainly wave riding spots around hobart area. Any info would be great. Cheers in advance
Hi, There is a great group of local sailers in Hobart so you are sure to get a heap of advice.
I lived in Perth for 20 years before heading back to Tas and offer the following thoughts; - My 81L wave board is too small for my 82-85kg in Tas, would like 92-95L - Sail size from 4.5, 4.7, 5.2 and 5.8 all get used....wish I had a 4.2 for the windier days. - Need to learn to wave sail on both tacks here. - The wind directions effect the locations where to sail. Also the wind can be very local, no wind at home but 7km away it is on! - If coming to Hobart, recommend living close to the action in Lauderdale. - Keep an eye on the wind forcasts. - Prepare for colder water. - Sailing in booties at a number of local spots - lots of fun to be had!
Thanks heaps for the info Rob. Thanks for the tip about lauderdale will definitely try get somewhere near there. Think I might need to get some smaller sails then as I'm 67kgs. When is windy season?
it can blow all year but generally September through to April is a mix of frontal winds and seabreezes in the summer months. I weigh mid 70 kg and only sail is a max of 5.3 with a mix of freestyle board and wave boards but some guys same weight have 7 meters as they slalom boards. as Rob says living in Laudrdale area gives you maximum chance to sail with many popular locations only 5 minutes and Hobart is 20 minutes
Had my first sail in tassie at clifton beach on Friday was a lot of fun. Cheers everyone for the tips and advice. Currently living in moonah so it's hard to get an idea if it's windy down that way. If anyone is able to shoot me a message when it's blowing that'd be great. 0415471033 Cheers Craig
Dono said.. Hey Damien yeah I do. If you could add me to that please that'd be great. Sounds good will have to wait till I'm working first
...and you'll get to know the flavour pizza some have ordered, what they'e doing whilst on holiday elsewhere along with other irrelevant beteises that arrive at strange hours too...advise switching off notifications if you don't like being woken in the middle of the night!
Will do Craig, Thats the same with all whats app groups, the Tassie kite one is quite a bit more active than the windsurf with not so relevant information. you get the good with the bad,, BUT WHEN ITS ON YOU KNOW!!!!!!! YE HA
