Hi guys,

Planning a trip to Henty!, last time we went in we took the long way round going through a lot of water parallel to the river. I believe there's a track over the top which would be drier but we had no luck finding it last time.

Has anyone got a gps track or able to draw it on google earth and send it through?

bearhooverpup@bigpond.com

Thanks

Johno can you put the map up on this site? I have no idea how to get into Henty at all. Thanks Kaz

I was going to comment about "WHAT ABOUT THE SPOT GUIDE KAZZA!!" and especially after such a positive post the other day about using the Spot Guide - but then I realised I've broken all my mapped zoom links
So I'll fix them up.

But for now Kazza, you can checkout the 'old' or 'original' track if you zoom in on the main map at the top of the Henty Spot Guide: accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin?service=blogger&hl=en-GB&passive=true&continue=https://www.blogger.com/blogin.g?blogspotURL%3Dhttp://wtspotguide.blogspot.com/2012/07/henty-river-mouth-strahan.html%26zx%3D1fqx8lriutkcl

or follow this link I just made: goo.gl/maps/w92Dk

But Johnno's is slightly different I believe, so good to check out ;-)

Well there you go, that's excellent Johnny! I didn't know it was going to be on the spot guide.....thought it was all a secret so the mainlanders couldn't come down and steal it from us.

Its ok for mainlanders to go there. The reason it wasn't on the spot guide was so Kazza didn't know where to go! Hate for her to get a scratch on the Prado.

Also, an alternative access description:

If lacking a 4WD (or reluctant to risk scratching it!), take a kayak and paddle in. On the Southern side of the Henty bridge is a convenient car park and kayak launching spot. It's about 4km to the launch site. Count on a slower than usual paddle due to towing your windsurfing gear and being (hopefully) absolutely worn out by the time you head back.

You could also launch a dinghy from the same spot. However in places the Henty may be too shallow for an outboard.

Thanks for the replies

Not at all worried about scratching the 4wd... Just looking at best options when going in with only self recovery gear.

The track we took last time had a lot if water crossings and I had heard there was an easier way except for one sandy pinch where you really got to stomp it.., which I prefer to deep water!

The 4WD scratch was a dig at Kazza :-)

Unfortunately I don't have a serious 4WD, so it's the kayak for me. Takes about 30min in and 45min back out. So really it's not too bad, especially given no chance of getting bogged or flooding the car.

I reckon paddling in and out is a pretty good and easy option. Good to know it's available. The track can be pretty bad at times.

That track shown on the spot guide needs to veer off before getting to the end. Instead of following the track right alongside the river after the big stretch of sand, you head up the hill to a small gap in the bushes and go arounf the back. That hill is one of the more tricky spots! I've drawn it in black.

Hmmm wonder how my surf ski would go towing all my gear, it doesn't have anything on it I could tie the gear to, wonder how it would tow with the gear tied to me. Would be a bit of a mission towing a speed board with gear and slalom board with gear, scratching the car sounds looks an easier option for me.

Ben I dont think the wind angle will be any good for Henty on Thurs looks too broad needs a fair bit more W in it. Fri might be a safer option

Is it possible to drive down Ocean Beach from Strahan until you get to the river? I have driven my subie on there before and it seemed ok...

We drove down the beach way a couple of years ago in the Prado, it's good until you start getting near all the dead tree stumps around and it starts to get very soft and deep so we didn't persist any further, not sure how far we were away from the actual river mouth, probably easy walking distance with gear.

Off a 4wd website

'A good coastal beach and dune drive. Out of Strahan you go 6kms to Ocean Beach then enter the beach and either go left to Macquarie Heads or right and go to the Henty river mouth.

Fantastic coastal views. Be very careful at the Henty river mouth as there are sections of quicksand type ground near the river. Many a 4b has been stuck and being washed out to sea on the high tide.

great beach fishing trip

Handy to go with another 4x4 for safety reasons.'

I took three sails, two masts, one boom, one board (Isonic 94). On the way in I tied all the gear into a neat bundle that I towed. Problem is that it's top heavy and the board tipped over a couple of times. The wind also catches it and it tends to pull you sideways -- not much fun if you don't have a rudder.

On the way out I tied all the gear to the top of the kayak and towed the board on its own. This was a much better setup.

You definitely want a rudder or at least a skeg.
