I took the foil out in West Ulverstone yesterday. The leeward side of Black Jack rocks provides a nice sheltered flat run for about 500m before heading in to the swell offshore. The return run gives a chance for some nice "downwinder" rides on the swell using very little sail power. Good fun, wish I'd thought of it before. Best with a WNW or NW as westerly gets a bit gusty and offshore.
JP135, 4.2m, NP Glide large in around 20knts.

Here's a GPS track for you Clarence. A nice localised NWerly came up this afternoon around 14+ knots which was fun on the foil. The reduced chop is a big plus for foiling in this spot, with some larger swell further out.
NP Glide Large, JP135 and a 5.7m S1.

A short clip from yesterday in a strengthening WNW off Black Jack rocks. The clip shows the transition from nice smooth starting point to gentle swell about halfway out and a nice rolling swell out the back. I'm hoping to polish up the skills to better ride the swell on the way back in and use the smooth area to practice gybes (wishful thinking)

Mort, that's a great bit of sailing in choppy conditions with swell on top. Yeah, foiling on the swells is great fun. I've also found gybing to be a really difficult process. The liveliness of the board esp when changing foot position and the responsiveness of the foil to swells has made it an unsuccessful mission so far. I think flat water is a really good place to start.

Thanks Damo, that's a great clip. I'm sure that flat water foiling helps to accelerate progression as Marty mentioned. Also to Alan's comment, height control is way more manageable when you're not dealing with a rolling swell. I tend to err on the lower flight side to be able to push through swell without breaching out of the back side.

I must admit that I look for opportunities to foil before "slapping" these days. When its good, its awesome

Nice vid - looks like a great foiling spot

Another clip from yesterday showing the changing conditions, from flat water in close to bashing through the swell out the back. A nice ride back in on the swell, sheeted out and peaceful .
Spring is bringing some NWerlies, which are ideal for this spot to get some cleaner wind on the Eastern side of the rock outcrop.
NW forecast to blow up today, but a bit late arriving.

Nice video, should inspire some more foilers this season.

I hope everyone had a safe Christmas. A couple of videos that I didn't get around to uploading of a couple of recent windy days in the NW.

Stanley forecast was around 15 knots and came in at 20-28 knots measured at the airport. Didn't take my smallest sail, so it was a bit of a survival sail. Nice view of the Nut though. NP Glide Small, 4.7 Blade.
New GoPro tryout, hence the boxy video setting.


Also a windy day in Ulvy. First time I've been out when the sailing club was out. John was doing well to hang onto the LT on a broad reach.
