Some photos from East Beach on Sunday. The wind had been around 30 to 35 kts all day and the swell slowly built up. Jason and I went around to East around 4pm to sail on the low tide. The cross offshore was blowing some of the power out of the waves and top turns were a little tricky at times but this is almost as good as East Beach gets.

It was great, gusty like it had been all day but lots of fun. I wonder what Bell Buoy would have been like...bigger swell ....even more wind but a little bit more choppy and less cross off I think.

Hey Al, just curious, any comments from the conventional surfers? They would have to be jealous wouldn't they?

It was a great little session Al, nice to get out in the surf after getting bounced around in the chop at Lagoon Bay. A big thanks to Jill for taking the pics, some very nice shots in there. It's difficult to find someone willing to stand around in 30 odd knots and take photos.

You guys seem to get your best conditions during those seabreeze conditions and I am guessing that this may not have been the most consistent year for seabreezes down there.

I wish those conditions were more common on the north coast, though any time there is 20kt++ and some wind swell is great, particularly with others on the water.

Its only a couple of hours drive from Hobart for you guys, and a strong westerly does usually produce something to jump and ride.

It would be great to run an expression session on the north coast during May June before the water has chilled to full winter levels but with some chance of a solid clean winter swell.

Mostly the surfers at East are Gtown kids who are just into their own thing, some are beginners and a few are the regular locals who cant be bothered traveling to far for a surf. I know that when Pottsy was there popping loops everywhere they were pretty impressed, my more pedestrian skills don't excite much comment or perhaps their silence is in itself shows some acceptance. A casual stroll through central Gtown would suggest that they are not slow call anyone a wanker, f----t or worse.

I try to give them plenty of space and if it gets to crowded I go and sail Bell Buoy.

I seem to remember a few of us down south would regularly travel to Low Head/Bell Buoy for a session. One thing you could be sure of was that if there was wind you also had swell unlike Carlton etc when the swell came the day after.
A classic example was this week when the points were working on monday following sundays wind.

East Beach is at Low Head only a couple of hundred metres from Lagoon Bay. Because it is protected by a headland the wind tends to be more gusty and lighter than it would be at Bell Buoy there also tends to be more surfers, swimmers and bodyboarders in the water. However the beach is quite long and it is usually possible to find a peak to yourself. The waves can also be a little smoother than at Bell Buoy.

Its possible that the best waves are slightly further down the coast at Cows Head. This is a known surfing spot and should have the best waves but is quite inaccessible without a bit of offroad driving. Hopefully this year I will get there and check it out.
