Hi there Tassie comrades. My wife has this idea and i'm kinda going along with it for now. She is looking at property in Dover and other places in Tasmania and my first thought was "where can i sail"?

Also my brother inlaw has just bought property near Swansea so that's an option too. i live in Perth WA currently and by the sound of things possibly looking for a sea-change, but the sea-change must include me and water that i can play in.


So guys/girls where can i sail? I like freeride (flat) and waves. I'm not at all competitive, i just like the sport. I have salt in my veins.

South arm area has land and all available wind and its directions covered it's by far the most popular living area for local windsurfers

Dover is isolated, in the lea of prevailing wind and as far away from favourite Wavesailing spots as you can get and from anything else for that matter!. The South Eastern corner of Tasmania East of the Derwent Estuary and D'entrecasteaux Channel is closest to favourite Wavesailing & Freeriding spots in the South. Other regions are well explained in the Windsurfing Tasmania Sot Guide
Distances may seem small for a WA local. Tasmanian geography makes what may seem a short journey tiresome.
Interstate property buyers often regret the lure of well priced real estate in rural / isolated ares. Due diligence is a must!

Agree with Relic. I work 10 minutes from Dover and have sailed there a few times, but it is not a good windsurfing spot! I'd rather drive almost an hour to go sailing in the South Arm area rather than sail any of the local spots down the D'Entrecasteaux Channel!

yeah thanks crew. No isolation for me. I don't know the lay of the land at all. Must take the time to visit and sight see to know exactly where places and locations are. I'm just looking at the google maps after my wife sends me property link. I need to be near the ocean and action is amongst other things.

Hey thank for the Spot guide Relic. I sent that to my wife so she can focus on the right locations. We will visit soon it's just we need to work out the logistics of getting there and getting around with one in a wchair.

The channel area is always a catch for Mainlanders buying in Tas, (who windsurf), nice and green and country lifestyle but no wind!!! dont fall for the trap!! . dont buy down there....
The vast majority of windsurfers cross the Tasman bridge to sail, heading south east to Lauderdale, Carlton, Pittwater etc.
Surf , flat water etc blah blah blah . I Nwould say windsurfing central would be around the Lauderdale Area. Many have purchased property there to be close to the "spot".

Tas is very different to WA, you need to be close to the action and ready to sail in different directions and locations depending on weather .. Lauderdale, South Arm is a good base.

Comming from WA you will need to learn to wave sail on the opposite tack too, we get both directions down here.

Don't write off the north of the state. Quite a good community of sailors in the Launceston area.
