Is there any idea of this season's comps yet? Things are hotting up all around the state. My adrenaline is pumping, there's wind happening and everyone is travelling all around the state to get it, whether it be waves, flat water speed sailing, learner days, everyone is hyped it's so exciting.

It would be sick to have a speed sailing week. Be based in Stanley and then we have heaps of options.

Why the need for comps?
I got hooked on windsurfing because I loved the feel of flying effortlessly over the ocean powered by a silent wind, feeling the board react under my feet - I like surfing but the buzz I get from it (approx 5 minutes per 3 hours in the water ) is what I get all the time windsurfing.
I had a sail at Doran's a few months ago, no one else out, I hadn't sailed for a while, it was sunny, board and sail were perfect for conditions, I hit about 28 knots max, but I felt like registering a PB in the category of "personal satisfaction". It was just a great little session.
I've never really been a competitive person, which is why I gave up team sports and dinghy racing, and got into windsurfing, the challenge for me is a personal one to find the best enjoyment (for me) out of boardsailing in the prevailing conditions.
Sure the GPS thing is great to see who can go the fastest in all categories, and I don't have anything against those who want to be the tops in the categories, as long as they don't lose sight of why they actually enjoy windsurfing in the first place.
As for wavesailing comps, (and never a wavesailor I'm not qualified to comment, but however...) I wish I took up wavesailing when I was younger, it must be the best feeling carving down a wave face and utilising the power in the sail to carve back up, and down again, etc etc. I love watching it, and everyone who does it is a winner in their own way, why the need for a competition? Does it recognise who had the most fun?
Anyway, that's just my perspective, happy sailing everyone!

Well done Easty, i think that is how most people in tassie feel,

Good thing is the sponsered sailor guys/gals often help organise / run and will demo their gear for part of their deal.

I think everyone that is left in our sport does it for the love of it. My comp is about trying to work less and sail more only wish I had better results. I think most of us only have a comp for the chance to sail with mates from allover the state. If we had gatherings not comps it could take the bad association that I think most of us feel about competitions and for most is just an opportunity to have a good time with your mates. The serious racing these days is our 6 pack comps which are easy to organize and heaps of fun for those that join in.

The beauty about windsurfing is it caters for so many different types of people with lots of different opinions.

I absolutely hate competitions and never took up windsurfing to compete against others, but, to better myself and enjoy the freedom of the sport and the awesome feeling you get out on the ocean sailing.

The problem is I'm too competitive and want to push myself past the comfort zone that holds most people back from improving or trying new things. Competitions of any form give a platform to learn and grow an individuals repertoire of skills, knowledge and abilities.

The great thing is we are allowed to have the choice to participate or not, how cool is that!

But I still hate competitions!

Calendar of events coming soon!

I love competitions, I love having something to train and work up for, I find if I have a goal to aim for I'm so much more motivated to get out there and improve the skills. And I love the competition day, around everyone that thinks the same and out there loving what there doing. I love the social atmosphere of it and the way it brings everyone together.
Also love just being a beach bum all summer too, so relaxing, chilling out on the water with the mob.
There's my 2 cents worth.

Hi Steve,

Yes we will have a light wind comp or gathering how about tomorrow at Dorans
We could have the first ever "slightly higher than light wind comp"
2 sec,5 x 10, dist and 1 hour should be a good day all over the state.

I am so ready for a good sail after the winter freeze
Anyone else keen???

I agree Easty, knowing what I've achieved is nice to know, but I'm just here to sail!
Although you will find the competitions themselves fun - the result irrelevant, as long as they share the beer.

Have you read the news posted on the GPSTC homepage?
