Yes we can ...

A speed run that is

How about we get a 500m length of 400mm diameter poly-pipe and anchor it in place in a curve (modelled off the famous Sandy Point) at Dorans in the shallows. This pipe would act as a chop-killer and allow for full 10-second speed runs and even a 500m attempt.

Just need to get the pipe, anchor it at about 5 spots along it's length and there you go.

Can we source some second-hand pipe? Some anchors and chain? Can we get Council permission? Would we want this out there? Could we store it along the foreshore as you drive in to the carpark when not in use?

Great idea Dave, wonder how much it would cost?? This may work.

Yep, same concept Izaak. I'll post some photos of the poly I'm thinking of later and some photos of how it kills the chop. The shallow water at Dorans stops the larger chop and swell, which is harder to dissipate, so that's why it is probably a good spot for it at Dorans, plus it is windy there (really windy)!!

I reckon we could probably trial it ...

The poly pipe would be great off port sorell on a high tide as we could set it up on the low tide so easy.Cant even imagine the speeds that could be achieved at Dorans!!

Guys get in contact from Jimbob and get him to dig up some of the Lake George weed and plant that in the bay it grows in salt water so should be fine, this stuff stops the chop better than any speed bank(probably cause an environmental infestation but hey we want flat water)

While we're waiting for the weed to grow, I'll check out some prices for used poly-pipe (ie ex fish farm pens)

Great idea,
unfortunately the likes of the photographers, bird watchers, saves Ralphs bay mob, will be a hard bunch to get it passed.

Even getting a concrete step/walkway down on the 'grassy' area is going to be a bit 'touchy'.
I am for it all the way though., /happy to support anything that promotes the sport.
cheers

What about 44 gallon drums, I wonder if they would work.

Adrian Oliver years ago had a plan of making a giant sausage out of industrial rubber to be filled with sand for an artificial reef. We could do the same sort of thing but pump it half full with water and inflate the rest with air. I'm not sure on costs for therubber but it would be good to have something that can be set up for an event and then removed afterwards. The other idea is a series of sections that tie together, much like the ideas on the images already shown and Steves idea of the drums. The only problem is creating something that covers the distance and can be transported.
Maybe we should focus on creating something to cover 2 sec peak and go bigger from there.
The ultimate is Daves plan to have a full length of 500m permanently in place, maybe we need to try and apply for sports funding to set up our international speed location.
We still need to get past the conservationists though, I heard Anthony saying he would stand up and fight to protect the natural chop that is threatened by this proposal.
Maybe we can push to council that this type of permanent placement will help to stop erosion of the Lauderdale area and ultimately save the council millions in compensation to the local residents. Also it would help protect the hooded pluvers from being swept away.

Steve has the right idea we only need 416 44 gal drums to make up the 500m, I have about 15 on the farm.
We could cut holes in each drum and make nests for the pied oyster catchers

I like Buzzy's spin on this it's a protection of the coast win win device.

Good one Buzzy

Look forward to seeing some designs..

What would the environmental issues be?

Working on this one, have a few ideas regarding material and only having it there during the windy months (non-seabreeze). Basically, we could do with a chop-killer at our marine farm leases during summer when the seabreezes come through and curtail afternoon on-water activity. Might be we could use the same chop-killer at Doran's, sort of like winter storage!

Now you are really starting to make this sound like it could happen. Absolutely fantastic safe storage area for a multi million dollar industries equipment and also creates an area to attract international sailors. Also protects endagered species etc. ie outdated record holders

Imagine the Alphas We could mark 250 metres on the pipe and place bouys 50metres downwind. To be honest I was originally thinking tie a bouy onto 50m of rope and fix it to the pipe. Once I started typeing I realised there would be that little hazard of a rope floating in the water, woops.

Dont get to excited, you might have to do 40 without the pipe haha
