Has anyone sailed from, say, Kingston over to Lauderdale?

I make it out to be about 10km. Given the forecast on Saturday arvo it looks like a possibility with a raceboard.

I've not windsurfed in the south before and would appreciate any advice or local knowledge.

Yes, plenty of people have (sailed straight across). Can get quite choppy off Droughty Point where the SSE wind chop from South Arm meets the S chop from the Derwent. Assuming you don't mean going the long way around the outside of South Arm? Good luck if you give it a try. Probably more fun would be sailing from Sandy Bay across to Howrah Beach. Wind and chop will probably be more consistent and lots of boats around if you get into any trouble.

I have done it a few times, like Dave said it can get choppy.

Yeah I've done it heaps of times too. Just make sure the breeze is steady because it's a long drift back!

Thanks for the info guys.

Probably do it Satuday arvo, the "short" way through the inside of South Arm. If anyone is keen for the long way via the Iron Pot at a later date, let me know.

I'll be doing it on a mistral race board- so variable wind and conditions are not a big issue.

Did the run on Saturday arvo. Wind did not come as predicted, so I didn't break any records, but made it across to Lauderdale no problem. It was a slow exercise getting out of Kingston Beach and in to some "decent" wind. I think I was on starboard tack for best part of an hour. Chop wasn't a big issue, but was a bit of a nuisance getting out off Kingston.

Met Shorty rigging on the beach at Kingston who pointed me in the right direction, which was much appreciated. Kazza was there to check my immigration and customs documents when I landed in Lauderdale (she didn't notice I smuggled in a joint with me). You guys don't miss much down south.

So many good spots for exploring and long coast runs down there.

That was me. One way was enough in such light winds. I would have been out until dark if I went back.
