Hey Nully,
The windsurfing in the Launceston area is pretty good. You will need transport though as the majority of the spots are around the mouth of the Tamar River, which is an easy 40min drive north of Launceston. Conditions range from slalom sailing to waves and wind strength can be quite varied depending on time of year and frontal systems. Winds gusting over 40 knots are not uncommon so pack a 4m if you have one!

JS68, I'm hungry for wind!! I used a 3.4 on garda lake so strong wind is just what I am looking for. Up to a 6.5 I like it but on bigger sails I don't know. Would you say it is windy enough to sail once a week ? less? more? I read Tasmania is a very windy place so are my expectations

Welcome to the best island in the world.

Wind in tassie is varied with a lot coming through Bass Strait.
We get frontal systems and "trade winds" that hit the state regularly

You will need a car of some kind, I reckon vans are best, also when you get a break there are awesome spots all over and from Launceston the rest of the state is 4 hours maximum.

Temperatures in tassie go from 5c to around 35c and the water tends to be between 10c and 20c.

Just keep an eye on the forums there is always someone going out somewhere

It's hard to predict if it'll be windy every week as we mainly rely on frontal systems as the sea breezes aren't that reliable. If you've got a 6.5 throw that in too as there are days when it only reaches 15-20 knots.

Example is last 6 days have been winds around 25-35 knots.
Fronts moving across the state. Then might get two weeks of high pressure systems only producing seabreezes.
Spring and early autumn provide Typically westerlies that usually give you a sail or two a week.
sometimes ( like now ) you get these patterns in summer.
4m weather down in Hobart yesterday, sure it was up North too.

I figure I will be busy all week long and I will rely on week-ends to sail a bit. so you know how it gets when two or three weeks pass by without wind! but I also figure that with a car I can go all over and this makes me think i will be able to find a spot somewhere. should I just come and see? I checked already the map of all those sailing spots, yhank you.

I had the same question a year ago when I was moving to Launceston from Croatia to do a PhD at the AMC. You will not regret coming here, the wind was very good all year around (except for a few windless weeks in August), and there is a wide variety of conditions you can sail, with good wave and flat water spots. There are few windsurfers (mostly sailing waves) studying at the AMC and we are all keen to go out as much as possible. You shouldn't be limited just to weekend sailing, especially in the summer with longer days.

This place is pretty unique. If you want to be sailing I don't think you will have a problem finding anyone to go with. From what I can tell the AMC boys tend to do more sailing then actual study!!! Having said that the likes of Greenie, Jas and potty mouth GClarke1 (who has been remarkably quiet lately) will always be at the ready any day of the week.

It will not take you long to settle in when you get here. We pretty much know everyone who is sailing, so the new kid on the block always gets interrogated!
