Where in sa. Robe is way to inconsistent with swell. Would have to be west coast somewhere.

Be happy to help out in some way but - just a few thoughts

Not much time to organise a national event in Feb when its already December + everyone to book leave etc.
I don't think any of us (i may be wrong) have a good idea of just what is needed to arrange this - sponsors, permits accommodation, judges, format etc - would need a little help from those that have done it before.


6-9 months would be a good time frame to ensure its all sorted

Yep... i had born of those concerns, as well ass not knowing the location. that's why i created a new post and didnt clog up the actual one haha.

What about the spring equinox at beachport on the westerlies and robe on the northerlies?
9 months away and not a peak tourist time of year for accommodation.
I'm sure the locals would get behind it and there could be some speed/ slalom/ race comp based at the lake.
Nearly always swell too
I'd be just as keen to head west and see the best if that happened.

what locals there is only 2 sailors in Beachport,
you won't get ant speed guys on the lake as west is crap there and sept oct it is full and choppy crap with no weed beds.
surf beach is sanding up bad from all crap they have done at the boatramp further up.
sorry for being negative but it would be a big call.

West coast for something different. Se coast (robe ) has been done before.

Mr Severne clearly stated at the last Nationals that is we got 20 SA lians, 20 viccos and 30 Qld and NSW Blokes to sign up then he would make it happen in the "Dessert" far NW...... that sounds like a better plan!!!!

Don't know about that Chris. If I was to travel that far again I'd rather try to get it uncrowned without all of Australia's best fighting over waves. Just my opinion.

Or sail in heats in perfect waves with only you and two other guys out. Fly to Perth and you can be there the same day.

By locals I mean sponsors and greater community or pubs caravan parks and general traders. I don't lake sail so whatever

Missing the point... This thread is trying to get the nationals to SA. Even if it is in 2016.

What is the thoughts on having a west coast competition in terms of travel for other states? Its a bloody long way from Adelaide still...

That makes the SE more appealing. And the Mexicans could drive.

Or... what about the deep SE in October. That picks up more swell than Robe/Beachport???

No doubt we get the wind James but the swell isn't always epic.
By the time the 4-9m swells hit it's blowing SW and my SW option only gets 3'.
W and NW winds can mean a few nice options but dead northerlies means you need to access Nene and that can be 4x4 only that time of year.
Browns is getting a new carpark a toilets but some of the other spots won't cater for 50+ competitors and spectators.
Maybe a SW Vic/ far Lower SE combo could work as there's sick spots around Port Fairy and Warnambool.
Btw our season is of to a cracker, sailed 3 seabreezes last week and Wednesday through to Sunday this week look the goods??

Cheers Pilly... Sounds like west coast is the only option for an all SA comp.

We've had a really fun day at Middleton yestdy, and a few decent metro seabreezes but nothing to write home about. Good to hear your scoring!

We struggle to keep windsurfing SA going. Are there really enough people who are going to put the effort in to organise and properly run a national event?

West coast - Elliston is a great spot but Walkers seems to needs just as much swell as Robe. Yes there are other options with swell but from what i have seen from my visits there so far, but they dont seem to be as consitent with wind. Further west i would be surprised if you would be accepted trying to hold a national comp there for many reasons.

One other consideration could be sceales - 1 1/2 hrs further north but picks up a bit more swell - similar wind -not far to Streaky - but could be a nightmare moving gear around everyday beach or one small carpark access - not sure how it would cope with a heap of crew though - just a thought

G'day Fellas,

Unless there are more consistent wave sailing spots around Ceduna. Sceales Bay may be a good choice as far as shore based facilities are concerned.

There are two flights from Adelaide to Ceduna each day with plenty of hire car options. Its only an hrs drive to Streaky from Ceduna plus the 30km out to Sceales. Freighting gear from Adelaide to Ceduna or Streaky shouldn't be an issue either.

As long as it is not peak holiday time there should be plenty of accommodation available between Sceales Bay and Streaky Bay or even Bairds Bay.

And there is a well equipped pub for the social side of life.

Like any place on the west coast there is always a few km's between drinks but that is part of the adventure as well.

West coast is great, but around 8 hour drive after getting off a plane.Country flights want take anything over 2m. And no one likes to freight there gear
Be hard to get the people to come.
Southeast sounds the go ,plus all wind direction covered

But saying that, we can't get anyone to help out with are own comps

I don't have the first-hand experience to decide between spots, but I'm happy to help with things as required. From what I've seen / been involved with in other (non-water) events, I'll bet that if it's too hard for punters to get to the spots (ie too far / too expensive / too long), and the chances of spots working are iffy, then your average Joe is pretty likely to stay home or go somewhere else... if it's going to be done in SA then it'd have to be late 2015 or 2016???

There I go again talking it up too early now it's looking like only Saturday.
I think everyone has valid arguments on the Nationals and it seems organization is the key.
If it were down here I'd be putting my hand up.

No one helps out with comps because everyone wants to be on the water. Who wants to sit and watch when it's pumping. At the end of the day no one cares who wins . Don't mean to put a downer on the situation but when conditions are good everyone's out having a good time.

Vote 1 Robe/beachport. Has never failed me down there. Always get on the water somehow. But we would be looking at 2016. Can't believe I'm saying that bits it's true really.

I brought this topic up at last years wcwc and no-one was interested.

After doing research a min of 6-12 months is needed for getting applications required, any sailing in national parks requires a lot of work but not impossible

The crew from east coast are happy to organise heats and judge if they are flown in, this group has done the last few natiionals

ps the west coast is halfway from wa and halfway from vic/east coast so I think u would get a good mix, most people are excited to have an adventure, the ones that think it is too hard u don't want there anyway!!!

As Zac said, Elliston needs national park applicatins so is out until Oct Nov 2015 at the earliest.
Cactus, would upset too many locals if we droped 30 to 40 wind wankers on their wave and limited campsites.
Scales Bay would need Council aproval which would take time , but Zac should be able to pull strings as he married the Mayors daughter,but again, lack of time now with the Xmas shut down.
For it to work, we would need to have 4 site options Flatties, Hot spot, Walkers and Scales to give us the flexablity to get the best condition on any given day. This would involve daily traveling, texting updates and Council approval for all site for a 10 to 14 day period. Elliston or Port Lincoln can be used as accommodation bases.
All this can be done but more time will be need to arrange, then commit a time that don't clash with another event, and gives plenty of traveling time to and from the event
More then happy to help out if there is enought interest and support.
