Tony from Brighton and Seacliff Yacht Club is hosting a Wednesday Night Racing Series for Windsurfing & SUP. Here are the details:

1st & 3rd Wednesday of each Month, starting November 2011 (next Wed!)

6pm start

Short courses

$5 entry, free pint after racing (do the maths people :-) ).

This should be a fantastic opportunity to dust off the old longboards and SUP for a bit of fun! See you there.

Is there any restrictions on gear as I noticed you said dust off your old longboards?

No gear restrictions. Whatever gets you around a course given the conditions on the day. I haven't spoken to Tony about the details, but I'm sure handicap starts can be arranged to level the equipment playing field.

6pm at Seacliff will most often be a light (usually!) gully wind or the end of seabreeze.
It's a pleasant time of the day to get on the water.

But if you only have a shortboard, I would suggest scrounging an SUP or longboard to guarantee getting on the water.

I have a longboard. I was just thinking if there was a bit of wind a slalom board might work better.

Found a old one design board in the hard rubbish last night, when back after tea to grab it and it was gone! Dam it.

Will keep looking.

Is there a rigging area at seacliff or do you just rig in the car park or on the beach?

Yep, this Wed at 6pm.

Legless, I think you can either rig on the sand or the lawn in front of the yacht club.

Some people seem to rig in the garden beds of the boat ramp car park.

I've been polishing up the Kona for an outing.

I promised Tony I'd write up last nights racing.

We had a great turn-out - 8 windsurfers and maybe 15 SUP at a guess. Conditions were flat with 12 knots wind Race 1 maybe 15 for Race2. SUP's were sent out on a 3 lap upwind - downwind course. I understand it was 25 knots on the nose for the SUP guys and gals :-) Sorry, I can't remember the results but congrats to all who got around the course.

We had a mixed fleet on windsurfers, and Tony split the group into One Design and Other. Course was around the groyne pole, around Paddy's reef and back. Beat, Run then tight reach. It was great to revive the dark arts - beating, picking the lay-lines and a run with the swells. Highlight for me was Dave Tonkin, who's One Design featured mould on the sail and a half-broken screw sticking out the fin box. No handicap for Dave, who beat everyone to the windward mark in both races. Great to see Dave on the water again - poetry in motion. Dave took out the One Design class.
Other highlight was an impressive win by Shane O'Callaghan on a Mistral Equipe and Severne race sail. First across the line in Race 1 and winner of the "Other" class.

On the Kona I had a bit more speed in the 2nd race, after bagging out the sail. Learnt more about getting the Kona to windward by chasing Dave and Shane than 4 years of casual sailing!

Nice to share a beer or two as the sun dropped below the horizon.

Take home message seemed to be good sailing was rewarded regardless of the equipment. So people, drag the old kit out of the shed. There are a lot of people hunting around for a One Design or Raceboard at the moment, so if you have one to sell or donate, please post here!

Next race is 16 November, 6 pm for the race start.

Thanks to Tony and the BYSC crew for hosting, and Severne and Onboard for sponsoring. Awesome effort.

Regards, Richard
