Windsurfing SA is pleased to announce the KA Sails Seacliff to Semaphore Open Ocean Marathon.

When
First windy Saturday or Sunday from 6th February 2010 onwards.
Wednesday before: Heads up posted on Seabreeze.com.au and Windsurfing SA blog.
Day before: Final decision posted on Seabreeze.com.au and Windsurfing SA blog.

What
20 km Open Ocean Marathon from Seacliff to Semaphore.
15 knots (~SW) minimum wind speed.
The event is organised by Windsurfing SA and sponsored by KA Sails. The Race Committee for Windsurfing SA is Richard Upton (Race Director), Chris Dimond, Marty Sellars and Dave Lane.

On the Day
12pm: Meet on Seacliff Beach near Boat Ramp
12.45pm: Briefing
Figure 8 slalom till wind hits 15 knots
Last departure time: 3 pm
4pm: Finish. BBQ and Prize giving at Semaphore

Entry
$30. Covers boat, BBQ and other running costs.

Do flares need to be carried if so how many/ what type per person?

No flares - but a mobile phone (in a water proof pouch). It's all in the pdf file - a bit of a read, but plenty of info!

im in for sunday if the wind is there, may have to swap shifts with someone if its saturday. probably be on my own by the sounds. really looking forward to it. havent sailed in the sea for over 20 years. hopefully i will recognise parts of the coast- just follow the leader i guess. when is the latest i can register. i have 6" black stick on boat numbers, is that ok?

As promised, we would check the long range forecast on the Wednesday before. It's not looking good for running the event this weekend.

Now, what we need is a day like Thursday to fall on a Sat or Sun. It will happen!

I will post again on Sat to confirm that we are rolling the event over to next weekend.

kymo_7 - it would be great if you could make the event (when we get the wind!). The sail numbers you described will be OK. We just need something unique that you can be identified by ( say with binoculars from the beach). The letter X in duct tape used to be popular!

Just confirming no event on the Weekend 6&7th Feb. Nice weather for fishing or something. Watch this thread - we might have more luck next weekend

We are scheduled for a Wednesday night event update right now, for the Weekend 13-14 Feb. However the long range forecasts still are a little iffy for the weekend. Let's leave it for another 24 h and the committee will put their heads together in the mean time.

Hi Everyone,

Sorry for the late post. We have been pouring over the charts, and decided it is (potentially) too marginal to go for an event this weekend. It will take a bit of effort to get things together on the day, and we want to make sure it blows hard and everyone has a good run down the coast.

So the event will roll-over to the weekend 20-21 of Feb.

I am also working every weekend for the rest of Feb, but can organize a mate to work for me if its gunna be on. maybe if everyone can register then have a text system as well as sea breeze.

Thanks for your interest in this event - and patience! It will go off at some point! We might have been able to run it last Sat. if we could have organised it with 1 hours notice (the seabreeze popped up out of no-where at 1pm or so). But to make it happen and to be fair to everyone we have to call it a few days in advance. Just need a good looking synoptic chart for that.

There was a pretty stiff breeze at Goolwa Beach today (Sun). Sand was blowing. What was it like on metro beaches.

Sellicks was almost a white out! CRAZY!

not good direction for marathon, SE all day

Not looking good for this weekend. A weak front coming through Saturday night that we should keep an eye on, but the associated forecasts aren't what we need.

As Divaldo pointed out, we need a SSW-SW-W to run the event. The SE along this part of the coast is too fickle for a run down the coast.

Weekend 27-28th Feb

Looks like it will be blasting in from the SE all weekend, with a bit a swell in the gulf too. Great for wave-sailing at Sellicks, but no good for the marathon.

This weekend was the last roll of the dice for this event - it's a long weekend next weekend with everyone away, and the boys with the rescue boats have been very kind but need to get on with their lives. So we will have to put the idea on hold till next Spring when a SW is a dead cert. Thanks to all those who put in to get the idea moving forward. Looks like we may have pushed our luck too far scheduling it for early Feb.

The boys and girls at Windsurfing SA will get together soon and make plans for events for next season. Thanks to everyone who ran or attended an event this season. We have had some hits and some misses. Always looking to improve the stoke factor. Maybe a format where events are held on, say, the first Sunday of the month regardless, with the venue and format to be decided by conditions? Any feedback welcome.
