It's just come to my attention that a development plan exists for Boggy Lake. Closing date for submissions is this Thursday 09 June. You can download the plan on the Murray Bridge council website.

The objective as described is to "provide appropriate facilities that can cater for passive sporting activities"

it includes the following...

- Plans for installation of facilites including furniture, BBQ, signage, toilets.
- Moving of livestock
- Re-vegetation/tree planting.
- Maintenance of roads and establish designated parking areas

It's also written that campfires are not permitted and makes reference to the launching of 'non-motorised craft'.

any thoughts about what you want/don't want on the reserve?

It all sounds good to me. We need to get the fences running into the water removed.

2km Speed bank would be good too. We can't have everything. Like the other guys said BBQ, Toilets and no fences in water would be great. What is the problem with Fires in winter - great if camping down there?

agreed, all the planned renovations would be welcome - keeping the road in good condition and having toilets in particular.

so, to ask the question: is there a way to permit campfires (say a sanctioned concrete firepit?). winter nights can be brutal down there. there is no natural growth there that people might be tempted to uproot for firewood, and if you positioned it right, there would be no fuel for it to start a brush fire (acknowledging dry seasons are in the middle of fire bans anyway).

Agree, campfires would be good (I've enjoyed a few down there).

Need to make sure any new structures don't cram the launch area (for kites especially I guess).

Maybe the carpark should be seperate from the grassy rigging area so it doesn't get too boggy when it's wet? But you don't wanna walk your gear too far, right?

If they put in furniture and a BBQ, i'm thinking it needs a wind break.

I spoke with the council today and they haven't had much response, but I can pass on everyones ideas and try to keep you all up to date with the planning. I was told that tree planting (not sure exactly where) would start next month.

Hell only just read this now.
IMHO no trees, if anything low level shrubs. Once you start talking trees etc that will affect wind big time. (Leeward wind shadows are big downsides.)
Toilets should be North of any carpark. BBQ South side.
Consideration for significant area for launch area for Kiters and plenty of room for beached windsurfers.

A good area as an example is at the Goolwa marina carpark. In front of D. Mossop's place. Except dont need huge car-park.

Anyway my 2 cents worth even though last day today:-(

ps - Just looked at the Council plan and by the looks the landowner next to where we rig well his fence line should curve around and be at the top of his bank!!
PSS - Also where his supposed land is below the bank that should be Zone E not D as it can be under water with normal water levels and a Southerly blowing.
psss - Do the Council know he has fences running through their plan?

If that farmer loses his land below his bank that would be the ideal place for a car-park if it was built up 2-3 feet!. Fence would be removed we'd all be happy but he'd be pissed!

Definitely no trees, preferably no shrubs either. Nothing to restrict launching area. Trees are bad for kites. Keep it natural, why plant something that doesn't grow there already.

By the way, wasn't the deadline for written submissions yesterday at 3pm?

I think they are taliking about trees over the scrub area to reduce the rising salt not over the grass at the lauch area.

Just so that everone's clear on this, I haven't been involved in the planning, and if you've got concerns about the development proposal, you may prefer to contact the council directly (phone 8539 1100 or use the online form http://www.murraybridge.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=218).

I will however, forward peoples suggestions for the development in an email to the council.

My understanding is that prior to the June 9 cut-off date for submissions, they'd typically look for objections to the development proposal. Beyond that, I hope that we can work with them to get the best outcome.

Mmmmm... in addition to toilets ,BBQ , and shelter shed how about a nice solar heated shower block .....well thats what they have done for us on KI.

And while we are at it a nice solar heated plunge pool to warm up on those cool days ,and specially roofed sail bays to protect the sails from the hot sun in summer! oh yeah

That will only afford you 75metres to get up to speed and 75metres to pull up for those 40knot Nm.

I am a little scared of the amount of parking area that will be available. As no parking will be permitted outside of these areas there will need to be enough room for big events such as the demo days say 40 cars. Also a lot of people have gear trailers and this needs to be allowed for both in manoeuvring and double length parks. Hopefully we can give feedback on the carpark layout before it is too late.

As Kimba has suggested a few of the local crew are also concerned about parking restrictions, campfire regulations and i guess the rules. At the moment it is a cruisy atmosphere where we can talk sh%$, have a drink a fire and have some fun. I hope the new rules don't ruin things.

Dont be too concerned boys, as it states, no funds have be allocated in the 2011/12 budget for ANY works at the Boggy Lake reserve, so when this is raised again in the 2012/13 budget, priorities will come first, such as council members wage increases etc etc, all the supposably IMPORTANT things, this proposal is way down the list.

Enjoy the lake as it is now, it will be years before a shovel full of sod is turned.

I've done a bit more searching on the web.

The whole thing has come about because PIRSA has a requirement to plant 500,000 trees along the shoreline of Lake Alexandrina before the end of June 2011.

The Goolwa to Wellington Local Action Planning Group has recieved a funding Grant (presumably from PIRSA) to plant trees on the Boggy Lake reserve.

This has prompted the council to develop a 'vision' for the reserve, which includes re-zoning the land to a 'flora and fauna' park. Fortunately for us it also includes 'public access to the waterfront' and to 'support and promote recreational and sporting facilities and events'.

That's a ship load of trees though.

thanks Boggy. that says to me the council developed the 'vision' so they could apply for the trees grant, but really they have no immediate budget for anything else so i think any car-parks etc are a long way off. that doesn't really worry me, we've been sailing there for decades with out bbq's!

Correction; not Goolwa to Wellington LAP anymore, it'll be done by some private company.

Just as a heads up....
Apparently the Lakes have been surveyed for fences and posts running into the water and have been GPS'ed plotted.
Landowners apparently have been sent notifications to remove these structures but most are unable to comply due to poor access. (being underwater - said structures, fence lines built when water was disappearing and cattle wandering away!)

Another guy presented himself from some Government Dept yesterday at Boggy Lake showing us the map and marked objects with 300+ identified. He was after feedback and has a meeting later this week to determine what sort of budget he may or may not get.
His thoughts were to either attach yellow buoys and or highway flexible markers (orange flat things with reflectors on them)
We all voiced our immediate thoughts on outright removing the fence that is right in front of our launch site!! We were all unanimous on that. We pointed out many posts and fence lines not marked on his map....

Anyway I have his email address and if anyone has any more thoughts post here and I can forward them:-)

BTW - he's not sure what his budget is and no he can't go get a barge and grapple out all these fences/posts :-(

I was joking about the speed strip. No whinging mate just voicing opinion on some of the feedback i have heard. We are just happy having water in boggy and wind also is good. Facilities will be good as long as it doesn't change things too much. I have sailed there since the mid 90's and am very fond of the old boggy just the way it is. Removing of fence posts would be the biggest benefit at the moment.

You guys missed a great opportunity to get in there and clear out the crap when there was no water , we cleared out our sailing spots around Lake Bonney including using a boat to pull out steel posts that were exposed, as they say 'you missed the boat"

We did remove debris but the fences were there to stop the cows going into the water and drowning.
