Hi,

I am a bit lost, when the wind picks up where do you postion the mast base?
Is it way back for high wind or forward?
What does the postion do while on the water sailing, in reference to the board and it behaviour.

Any advice will help me setting up for a better sailing day.

This depends on a lot of factors but especially the type of board & what type of conditions you are sailing in. If the wind picks up a lot & you are on a big board it is often best to move the mast forward to keep the nose down & prevent it getting blown around. This will give you more control esp in rough conditions. If you are using a fairly new board (last 5 years) you do not have to move the mast much - usually only 1 or 2 cms either side of centre. Try it in different positions & see how it goes.

I keep it very simple... centre track no matter what size sail or wind strength.

I think the general rule is forward for control and aft for speed.

Walt, also keep in mind that moving the mast base forward lowers the boom height, and moving back raises the boom height relatively speaking. Lower boom + mast forward generally gives more control in high wind. It will also weight the front foot a bit more, handy if you ever get the feeling that your front foot is slipping out of the strap.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the input to my query.
I experimented on the weekend and what a change with moving the base forward and back.
Now I know the balance for my sailing. I always had the base fully forward and what a difference with the base back it realy lifted the board nose up and what a joy to sail.
Special thanks to Mineral1 for your personal reply to my Query.

try this ...measure 135cm from tail of board mark your track with a waterproof pen and set your mast base at that point when you go sailing it is a good starting point and you won't have to move it....
