Been looking into changing my one of my boards jp excite ride 120, i was thinking of changing it to a starboard futura or a isonic, 115ltrs. Im just wondering what the benefits would be if any, really looking for a board that planes early and has good control in flat to choppy water in 12-18knots +/_ a few knots . Any feedback would be welcome, i weight about 70kgs going to use a 7.5 sail

I'm about 78kg and am very happy on 115 when it's light. You could probably go to 110 or less and still get going in 11kts. Kurt can't do that.

The 101 litre 64cm wide 2010 Sonic would be perfect.A few selling on seabreeze.

For your weight this is more than big enough.

A 38cm go well with the 7.5m.

Shane is 75kg,uses this 101 and 7.7m with 38-42 fin and is very hard to beat in light winds!

Lee, I used to have Excite ride 120L for 2 years in 2006. Then I sold it and changed to 3S 96 which was so much more fun plus I simply got a leap in my sailing. X-cite was very unexciting board to sail. Very boring.. and I stand by my words.. Jumping 120 Excite was simply dangerous.

At your weight, the perfect volume board for you would be 100L. You will be able to easily uphaul it, use in very light wind and still have lots of control in much strogner winds. My friend who is an amazing racer in Oahu uses Fanatic Falcon 99L/102L with sails from 5 - 8.3m and finds that for his weight of 75-80kg 100L is a perfect volume. If you look a few steps ahead, having 100/99L slalom (Falcon) you will be able to add a 80-84L wave board and really progress and have fun in much bumpier and jumpier conditions..

In terms of max speed Falcon and X-cite is like day and night..

I didn't care about speed or using sails bigger than 6m and went freestyle route.

I weigh 78kg and sail a wood Futura 111 as my big board paired with a cambered 7.5 and a select s10 41cm fin. It is a perfect combination up to about 18 knots when I get off it on to something smaller and more lively. If big boards were really the ducks nuts, we'd sail them all the time. The futura is mundo forgiving and gybes easier than the ISonic. I had a slalom board before and the futura is streets easier to sail. Leave the slalom boards to racers but if you wanna be one, it is your choice. You won't be much slower on the Futura but you will have more fun and it will handle the chop better.

If you can afford it, go the wood. Wood is stiffer and faster. And get a good fin too. It is the best money you'll spend. The standard drake fins are from the discount bin.

I've got a JP All Ride 106 Pro Edition and i weigh 67kg. I bought a 6.7 Hellcat and wasn't really sold on the combo. The board was good with my 5.7 Firefly or my Fusions before that but not as good with the Hellcat. Too much sail for the fin. I use it as my light wind board but it would spin out too easily on chop and didn't really get enough lift for what i wanted. I recently bought a new fin for it, it came with a G10 32cm Freeride. It's a 36cm Select SRX Free Slam. Now i love the board to bits. It planes very early and is FAST relative to what it was before. It jumps better and everything because now you can really drive off the fin with your back foot just before the ramp and it doesn't spin out. It has made the board so lively and it just lifts and goes and now feels much lighter. It's not as quick as a Slalom board because it isn't one but for a Freeride bump and jump type board it flogs. Recently when the wind has been marginal a few times most of the others have been chugging and i'm planing which definately hasn't always been the case. The new fin rocks and made a pretty good board an awesome board. I'm yet to try it with my Firefly but i can't see it being worse.

+1 from me - I weigh 88kgs and I have a 2010 JP FS Wave 112 litre Pro edition. Its a light, tough board and has a more slalom oriented (fast) rocker than most FSW boards. It carries a 7.4m freeride sail well and I am up and blasting about in 14 to 18 knots.

Only thing I would change would be to go for wood not the Pro carbon - its less stiff than carbon and easier on the aging knees (albeit a tad heavier).
