I have some bad blisters on my hands from a great session the other day, I've been thinking of getting some gloves for winter and so if I get blisters that are really raw I can wear gloves and not make them worse.

Just wondering if anyone wears gloves, what type, brand and can I just buy them online?

I use the Niel Pryde ones with cut off finger tips, they grip the boom nicely and save all that wear and tear on your mit's.

You will be told to harden up for wearing them though

you can always buy some liquid HTFU and rub it on ya hands Bretto and stop moaning about your blisters - thought you tradies were supposed to have tough hands!

Mine are "Uveto" with cut off fingertips, work well when you're all blistered.

But the best solution is to sail more often and build up those calluses!

Thanks Rip In Gale, just checked out those gloves and it looks like there's way more variety at the marine shops so I'll go down and have a look tomorrow.

I have a pair of the Pryde fingerless gloves but I have always preferred the Musto brand for sailing gloves, and the ones that are full finger on all but the forefinger and thumb.

They should all cost about the same too. If you're paying more than $50, you're getting ripped off.

if you've got an old steamer - cut about 6 -8 inches of the arms - slice down one side for your thumb to protrude but leave it long enough to cover up to your first knuckles - with the external seam from the arm hole towards your fingers - did it when I was learning and worked better than the fingerless gloves that are rotting on my shed floor.

Then someone directed me to HTFU stop impersonating a rubber man with a floaty vest booties and gloves - now I sail naked and just grin and bear it!

When its windy for days in a row and you don't have time to develop decent calluses, make your own.

Put a callus-sized drop of super glue on each of the prone places on your hands before you go sailing, wait for the glue spots to harden and, presto!, instant calluses.

I find that most of the glue is worn off by the time I get back to the beach so it doesn't prevent me from building up calluses, just reduces the tenderness.

Some great ideas and thanks for all the links too, I ended up getting a pair of Ronstan deckhand gloves. I'll just use them when any blisters are red raw, then when they have dried up and gone to dead skin I'll leave the gloves off or for when ever someone needs a deckhand I got a few tips from Mike at Onboard too, he said just poor metho over the blisters then after you hit the roof they'll be all dried up.

Rather than Metho (which is not good for you) go to the chemist and get yourself some rubbing alchohol (I thunk it's a different type of alcohol) quite cheap and doesn't stink like metho

Also goes well with Orange Juice

Mind you Metho and Milk is quite acceptable

the zhik gel ones are good.
i have piles of them around somewhere
they are pretty cheap too
i think around $12 and they are grippy as hell.
make sure you get ones that fit tightly
but they are the best gloves being produced

When I was rowing the coach always recommended a good piss an the hands, mind you dunno if it really worked, like playing a guitar the more you do the more calluses you build up and the less painfull it is.
