Anyone out there used similar size Talons and Canefires?

I'm currently running a 40 Talon in my Futura 111, which is a great combo for blasting downwind and doing speed runs.

However, sailing across the breeze recently going for an hour, pretty powered up on a 7.5 Koncept, I was struggling to get upwind and found myself wanting a stiffer, more powerful fin that I could crank upwind on when needed.

I like the look of the Canefires, but not sure about sizing. Should I go a 42, or is the Canefire inherently more powerful than a Talon, meaning a 40 will be on the money? I typically use a 7.5 with my F111, occasionally a 7.0 if it's really windy.

Ps: I'm around 105kg (on a good day) and fast concluding heavy guys need bigger fins

The canefire definitely has a lot more power per size. I used to run a 42 cm canefire on my JP supersport 118 (69) and RS7.8 works very well upwind.

I have recently got 38 and 44 talons as well, they are very fast fins but don't go upwind that well. I would say a 40cm canefire will be good for your combo, or 42cm if marginal conditions.

I am 93kg and mainly sail an Isonic 122/or86 and over the years have come to the same conclusion. If you are over 85kg to fang upwind you need bigger fins and bigger boards which slow you down on the speed run off the wind. I have a vector carbon rocket 36cm which is fun with a 6.7 on the 122 in 18-20 knots. I got the fin off Jesper but it seems to have more rake than the rockets on the vector web page. I think you should try a canefire carbon and you won't need to go so big for your weight. Having said that the normal canefires are pretty stiff to.
There is a big guy over at melville who also sails a 122 with a chunky looking carbon 40 (leading edge) and he flies.

hi there, i just bought futura 111 which i sail with NP 6.2 hellcat and NP H2 7.7 , i am thinking to get talon 38 and talon 44 to use with those sails, any suggestions guys?

Those sizes might be a tad large. I'd probably lean toward a 36 for the 6.2 and a 42 for the 7.7.

But depends on a few factors like your weight and whether you want to use the fins in powered up or marginal conditions.

What do you weigh?

Ive been using the talons for a while and find that with my 79cm wide slalom board wih a 9.0 I use a 50 if its light, or a 46cm if its fully powered up. These fins seem to handle a bit of breeze really well, you can comfortably hold on to the same size of equivalent fin in stronger winds, or go up a size or two if you are looking for ultimate light wind performance.

I agree with Pointman re: size. I am around 93kgs and use a 44 Talon in my iS122 with an 8.8 CodeRed and have found this combo perfect for decent conditions. It has ample grunt to point hard although in really marginal conditions I will use a 48 Talon (less frequently now though).

Gab - I have used Pointman's Futura 111 with a koncept 7.5 and a 40 talon in about 13 knots and it was a sweet combo. I am about your weight.

i just received my new talon 36 and 42, they don't fit in the tuttle box, do i need to sand them a bit? please help

Had exactly the same problem with mine. Get some soap (dry) and rub on fin then see where it needs to be sanded. Repeat this until you locate all rubbing points on fin housing. Hopefully the fin will fit snuggly into box. Make sure you don't take too much off though and use a sanding block.
