A wave came from behind as I was standing in the shallows about to pick it up and carry it out of the water. I'm guessing the front of the board hit the mast? But to do that kind of damage with a piece of white water standing in shin deep water?

I have heard that SD boards were easy to ding, and that they had issues with delamination in the past, but that is ridiculous. My Goya Bolt has taken hits and more, still good, same with JP Magic ride. Sure mast impacts on the nose made some dents and eggshell cracks, but that was it.

Looks like the impact was from the other side, can you show a picture of the bottom?

As Sandman has said, doesn't look like a mast impact to me as the fracture orientation in along the wrong axis. I'd say what happened is the wave has picked the gear up and driven the nose straight into the sand,? I've had a similar thing happen to me before with my wave board, very similar style of fracture. You have to remember that water weighs 1 tonne/m^2, that's a massive amount of force, and if your gear happens to end up in the wrong spot, bad things happen. Case in point, I have Ezzy RDM wave masts and they are basically unbreakable....I've had huge wipeouts that have destroyed sails...mast fine. But one day I broke the tip clean off on in a seemingly benign 1 ft shore break, the forces just lined up perfectly and pop, tip snapped clean off.

TLDR; I think you were unlucky. I wouldn't say, generally, the Starboard layup is mega strong, there are always weight/cost/performance considerations here but I've had the same thing happen to a Fanatic quad, which has pretty strong Kevlar reinforced nose.

Sorry to hear Philn. Speaking from a JP perspective, there is seems to be an indestructibility vs comfort trade off. The full carbon models 10 years ago are indestructible, but ate joint cartilage. The newer models are easy to damage, but very comfortable. Is it possible to have both while keeping prices under $4-5k?

Sorry to hear, its not what you want on a new board, or an old one either, and you dont hear of many boards being damaged this way.

It does sound the most likely, a wave has pushed the board into the sand and the weight of the wave has applied too much pressure.
But if it was shin deep water you were standing in the wave cant have been that big unless the beach is very steep and the waves practicaly break on the beach. One place I sail has a 'sharp' lip to the beach where a small hollow runs along the beach and the waves are sometimes a bit dumpy, but I doubt the force of the wave there would be enough to break a wave board, which is what the Kode is, its not a light weight slalom board. How large were the waves?
Are there and small signs of this on the front of the board underneath? Does the crack also go around underneath?

I have a board which I had a few catapults on and the nose was very strong where the mast hit, but the board must have flexed 40-60cm away from the nose, possibly where any reinforcement ended, because it delaminated slightly on the top of the rail.
The board has a scooped out nose on the deck which makes it thinner, which I dont like as it makes it less stiff. Starboard make a lot of their boards thin (their wide and thin approach) and a friend did 1 catapult and put a 30cm crack from the nose backwards along deck and hull. How does the thickness in the nose compare to those other boards you reported on recently?
Their brochure mentions 'Deck is Full 0.6mm Australian Pine Wood on 3mm H100 PVC to ensure durability and comfort in a good weight ratio. The Wood will be less visible this time and protect by a nice blue paint which gives a really nice effect. Let's go back to Starboard origin with Class.'
So I assume it would also have PVC sandwich on the hull as well, but it doesnt mention the hull.

I wouldn't let Starboard brush you off either about the warranty. Can you see any sandwich material under the crack, I'm guessing in the photo I can see wood and glass under that (edit - but the PVC might not be visible)
Take some photos of the beach where it broke, if its just a normal beach then boards shouldnt be breaking in waves in shin deep water.
The only way to see if there is an issue with the board construction is to dig a bit deeper and maybe with an impartial board repairer.

Thanks for your post. I was considering a 2021 Kode but maybe I might just go Tabou instead.

Hard to tell from the pic but that looks like there's lots of fluffy glass there where they haven't used enough resin. I had a starboard that did the same, when I cut in in half there was large areas of glass with no resin. Warranty if that's the case.
