The Severne/MS/Gaastra specified 460 masts are $1250 but the NP equivalent is $1400 (no info on KA, Loft or Point 7). Are they made in Australia or elsewhere (China?). I like the fact that the company is Australian owned so dealing with warranty issues may prove simpler.

Anyone know if they are going to produce RDMs?

Pretty sure they are produced in Australia & from what I have heard the reliability of the Avanti "production" masts has been exceptional.

It would be good if all sail brands agreed on a spec to simplify things & stop trying to force people to buy specific brands to suit their sails.
Getting masts manufactured all over the place with little or no control over QA they leave themselves wide open to failures as we have seen in the last few years.
I admire people's perseverance when they have multiple failures with a particular brand but go back for more, I would ditch them after the second swim

If a couple of the local Australian brands (insert tongue in cheek) used Slake & agreed on a spec the price would probably be reasonable as they could run batches & carry some stock.
Manufacturing 1 offs is always going to be expensive, hence the $1250 - $1400 price tag.

Iv'e got a growing collection of CST/Slake masts (400 RDM, 430, 460, 530 SDM and counting) and highly recommend them! There has been no cam wear whatsoever and the attention to detail such as reinforcement at the base and ferrule means they will last as long as my M-1 Machines!

These prepreg filament wound(towpro) masts "Feel" like they have a high fibre to resin ratio when rigging as compared to other hand laid masts I have had which feel a bit dull. The sufrace is also super smooth when comparing them with some hand laid(X...) masts which quite often have highs and lows. I would hate to measure the thickness in some of these lows...

I have only used the my masts on M-1's and so can't comment on how they might transform sails from other brands. I dont think you can really compare prices to other brands as they really are in a league of their own. Having said that, I have purchased all of mine second hand

Solid grip there Kimba you been practicing lol, you do know that they use pasta in constructing these masts

Haha, not enough time sailing, too much time for other stuff... Yes they pre dye the pasta and someone painstakingly wets and joins the edge of each pasta bow and then they place the whole thing on a giant chopstick and glad wrap it while it cures.

I dont mind paying what I paid for these masts

Brett Morris & others have been using them in Formula series this year & I have not heard of any breakages. They are worth the money when you consider the risk of breakage of normal masts & the damage it will do to your sail.

Hmm has anyone used these on KA sails? Wonder if they ship to the US

At least compared to prices we have in Croatia. What do you guys pay for a 460 mast from NP, P7, Severne or Gaastra(GA)?

I'm not quite getting it either. They claim to have more responsive, lighter, stronger masts. The more responsive part if true could gain you a victory, I get that, but they really are 2x the list prices of many others, and of course most racers don't pay retail at all...so who is the market for these?


Maui Sails 100% 460 is 1.98 kg, Slate Maui Sails Compat is 1.75. Warranty is the same (although isn't NP giving 6 months or less still?) Is that worth it?

And, free shipping..even to where I live is nothing to sneeze at.

It's kind of interesting actually, because I wonder are pros going to start getting mast quivers, like they do with fins, battens or whatever? I mean I guess they could even order custom masts, you know change the curve a little on top, Charlie...lets try that one today.

Kinda already happening... saw a bunch of them at the PWA in Costa Brava.

Received my Slake NP14 550 here in Greece a few days before our last Formula event.
Made my EVO5 10.7 a whole new sail. (incredible)
Won my first race in 28 knots. (even more incredible)
The mast has an amazing amount of feedback and increased my sails range.
Am now selling all the other masts I own.

I'm saving for my KA 460 Slake. Might take a few extra lawn mows, but after two splits on 2 masts from cheaper brand, not KA, it amounts to the same $ amount. Annoying

Curious but why not try getting a KA mast?

For what it's worth,,
Why have I been reluctant to spend money on the "brand" masts,,,?
A,, Because the history of breakage from my chosen sail brands' mast manufacturer is the worst in history.
B,, After the testing and measuring of many supposedly identical masts,,,, no two are ever quite the same. So paying money to be in the "hope I get a good one" lottery is IMHO not money well spent.

Which mast were you using? Luckily I have been pleased with my KA masts. I believe they are made by imac.

Buy Aussie. Service, able to talk with them on phone and delivery to my door! I've sailed them and I love pasta
