Looks like Severne introduces new materials into the S1 range, with radiating carbon fiber tape technology, similar to Neil Pryde Forceline or Avanti Sails construction, I imagine it will be lighter weight.

Looks fabulous! Cant wait to try this technology, Using 2013 and 2014 S1s the sails are excellent! Truly singular in feel.

It's going to be quite different to Forceline and lighter than the Avanti membrane construction, looks like Severne is going to take light weight extra reinforced sails to another level.(close to 2kg for a 5.2 blade) Phillip Koster is already using the Blade in Pro construction. The ZU will have the Pro demo sails available in the next two weeks !

The Blade Pro is bloody light and for sure a new benchmark. The only that I need wonder is how is does compare to the standard Blade.

"The new sails are mainly red. They have the same pretty white/ yellow criss cross pattern they had last year. Because we like that so much we added some black lines to it. We think they look awesome. And we also believe so will our customers."

That was my first thought as well... that must be why he is bloody good. On a different note, I thought the new S1 was supposed to be a 3 batten sail?

Looking at the creases across the top batten in the first photo maybe only 3 battens actually do anything ?

The S1 will still be a 4 batten sail, a 3 batten would have to have the "3" in the name, for performance reason.

They look pretty sick on the water, especially when backlit. You can see all the fibre weaves. Really stands out.

I doubt Ben will lend me one! haha

Seems the new material goes all the way to the luff sleve, and eliminates the Dacron sleeve panel, which had a nice power-de-power pocket effect on the 13 and 14 sails.
I'm wondering if the new material is incorporated into the E5 or the EM3 that was used previously??? Or a completely new E??
This new material also reduces or eliminates the need for the spiderfiber load strips?
Fascinating technology that's for sure.

Hey Stehsegler,

As you know Severne's philosophy is quite different to other companies. Performance, durability and weight come first, than Graphics. There are plenty of brands with bright panels stitched into their sails. Looks great but it also adds weight and increases risk of damage (more stitching) . Severne will only use seams/stitching needed for shaping not to create a certain look. The material used in some of the Severne sails are very expensive, keeping it all the same colour keeps the price down for the customer.

The new Pro model sails are made in a different way to normal sails and will set a new standard for weight and performance. Wait and C

You do realise that there was a serious amount of sarcasm in my comment?

That said I don't really care what the idea behind the the black lines is. I am sure they are there for a reason otherwise why spend the extra money during production. What I do care about is performance and weight.

I think though performance is relative. For example I have never been a big fan of feel of Gaastra sails despite having owned a number of them over the years. Yet, other people swear by them.

I think Severne has done a great job in designing very lightweight sails and rig components. As I have stated before especially heavier riders can really benefit from using light weight gear as it allows you to use bigger sails without compromising handling.Oh by the way this is in reference to wave sails.

Yes, you will get most benefit from the bigger sizes. A 5.7 will feel more like a 5.0. The wind range has also significantly improved (over already very impressive normal Blade/S1) which means you can probably drop one sail in your quiver. Please keep in mind the normal sails are already some of the lightest on the market, these Pro models will take it to a whole other level but are probably not needed for most recreational sailors.

The 2014 S1 5.6 I am using weighs 2.9 kgs. The whole rig inc mast, boom, extension is only 7kg. In contrast the 5.8 I was using for light wind prior to that came in at 4.08 kg for the sail alone. The 5.6 is like you are holding a 4.5...

I have had a couple of light weight guys having a go on it last season in about 12 knts. on a 118 Quad. One of them was planing on the way out. Both of them went out and bought Severne setup for light wind days the following week.

You really have to try it out for yourself to see how big a difference it makes. Personally I am surprised the mags haven't focused more on the weight aspect in their tests.

^^^I think the weight of your board has more impact, You can get a kg or more out of a board whereas your talking a few hundred grams out of a sail. I honestly can't tell the difference in sail weight when fully powered, maybe light wind days it come into play. I think the reason they don't focus on weight is that if you look at all the pros out there they are spread across all brands, All of which have outstanding sailors. As far as I'm concerned all manufactures make great sails these day, all of which will suit individual tastes. I think you just need to go and try to see what suits you. I did that just this season and went and tried a lot of sails from different manufactures and after sailing the same brand for 5 years found something that suits me better. Moving from brand to brand is and experience, They all have different trates...Some good and some bad. I eventually found something that suited me, They had the good things that many brands had but none of they bad. My 2 cents, if your going to change sail don't go by all the hype. Organize a demo from your local shop and try them, Even interstate guys are willing to get demo sails to you to try. Try them all and find what's right for you....Lightness is not everything.

My issue with this new material is the ability to fix them when that get damaged. How many sail lofts have material to fix these panels when they get busted??? I could be wrong but I think they'll be throw always when you damage them. My 2014 NP's were near impossible to patch without cutting the whole thing apart and replacing with new stuff. Not only do they look sh!t now I'm sure they have zero resale value.

My say

I think if you just go back and forth and always ride waves fully powered up weight doesn't make a big diff. When you get on a wave barely powered up any weight reduction makes everything a lot easier... as you said, different people like different styles.

One more thing though, I find with lighter sails I can easily go a little bit lower in board volume which again makes things easier once you get on a wave. Don't know. Maybe I am alone with my opinion... a bit like when I used to tell people the market needs 100+ litre boards. A few custom companies told me it's not possible and most of the manufactures said there was no market. Now look at it. At most beaches wave large wave boards dominate the scene.

My say

I think weight has a lot to do with how a sail reacts. Even when fully powered. You may not notice it when plaining around in the harnes but unhook on the wave and it all starts to play into effect. I agree with light boards being another area where you can improve light wind wavesailing but there is something to be said about holding a 5.6/5.7 and it feeling like a 4.8 in your hands. and in light winds that can make all the difference of having a great sail.

ive been told the new laminate/process they are using really improves the wind range on the new s1s And is lighter again. Pretty impressive considering how light they were before. The first generation of s1 4batten is a amazing sail but the wind range was terrible. They had made some improvement s last year and it sound like even more this year. Pretty keen to see how they go. They look the business to. Nice work Ben.

On a side note
I think quite offten people choose the wrong sail for ther style. I know I've done it befor. Being a bigger guy 96-98kgs I would have thought I'd be a power wave sailer but turns out I'm not. I like to surf the wave with my board and use the wave more for power then the sail so i love how the s1s feel very light and disapear on the wave. where as power wavesails continue to drive through the board as you ride which if that's what you like or are used to your going to hate a sail that lifts the board instead of drives through the Board. (Not sure if anyone will get my thoughts but that's the best I can explain it.) I also think it also has a lot to do with where you sail. If you have consistent wind year round or during the season your going to be used to holding the power down in your sail. Where as I always sail is sub 20knots bar 3-4 times a year so I'm looking for a super light sail and board to help me get the most out of my gear.(bring on the 120 nuevo) If I had consistent 25knots all the time my idea of what sail I want to use might be a lot different.

The pricing and first sails should be available by next week.
I have the feeling Severne is confident enough the Moreno twins will dominate the tour on the normal blades. I would think 80-90% off all the 2015 Blades sold will still be the normal construction.

This is True, I used one of the new membrane blades most of last summer, the material does definitely feel and sound different to everything else i've ever sailed and super light weight.

is the membran like avanti sails and even lighter or completly different ?
