Are there any crossover type sails (or similar) around the 5.6/5.7 size that are specifically designed to be rigged on a 400 RDM rather than a 430? Looking to buy a new sail but don't really want to have to buy a new mast as well, or alternatively are there any that people have rigged one up on a 400 anyway that worked well?

i don't think there are many cross-over sails designed for a 400 mast in those sizes. There are plenty of wavesails thou...

there is the one listed above... and looking at some of the advertising banners on seabreeze those hotsail fire's are going really cheap i think $650 brand spankers?

the severne swat's and s-1's are designed to rig on the 400 in the 5.6/5.7 sizes. swats would be cheaper then the fire, the s-1's are $900ish new.

neilpryde 2011 fireflies and atlas rigged on a 400 in those larger sizes, but not for the 2012 sails. You'd have to chase around for a second hand one.

There are also more race style sails such as loft switchblade 5.8 that will rig on a 400.. but i don't think that's what you are after.

i have a 400 rdm and run the 5.6 s-1 as my biggest sail. it's freakin excellent, heaps of grunt down low, crazy light, mega stable and plenty of wind range up top.

p.s. you should probably mention which 400 rdm you own, as it does make a difference.

We have the first Fire Lights arriving in Australia in mid January. 5.7 Firelight available for demo.

I've got a North platinum series 400, imcs 19. Reckon that would work with an s-1? It's a wave mast but I'm not up to going out in the surf yet just need a larger sail to be able to go out in the lighter winds (only have a 5.0 gaastra manic in my quiver atm) to practice so I can get there, would the s-1 be ideal for that or should I work my way up to it?

at a guess north rdm's will probably be okay with severne sails... not great.

i just realised that you are only starting to learn, i'd suggest you go for the 5.7m SWAT instead if you are keen to get the severne sails as it would be a bit more durable as it is 100% xply. Also the s-1 can get you planing early if you are willing to (and know how to) work for it, while the swat will just truck along regardless of what you do, so probably a bit more beginner friendly.

If you are in perth go see paul @ 2nd wind, he would be able to put you on the right track, and will be able to help you figure out if your mast will work ok with the sail you want.

I've found that I bend extensions when I rig my 400 with maximum extension...well I use to, I've got tired of buying new ones so I've now gone carbon. I can rig my 4.7 Alpha and 5.0 - 5.8 Atlas on my 400 with upto 34cm extension...but be warned, your alloy extension may bend. Buy a new mast....That's what windsurfing is all about

Top tip, don't ever buy alloy extensions that have holes drilled though them for the pin/height lock mechanism. Some (maybe the chinook) are double wall but many aren't and as you can imagine a tube with a shirtload of holes drilled down it is not strong. I have bent a few of the fore mentioned but since i've had my prolimit one, which has a 'circlip' type arrangement, i've never bent it and I run up to about 30cm extension. Or just buy carbon

Bent 2 prolimit alloys, now have prolimit carbon....at least they did me a good deal on the carbon replacements

I broke a carbon extension in the waves. I have the Chinook aluminium extension now, it looks bomb proof, but heavy.
