Hi , trying to decide wether to go gorilla , 90% or 100% ... is it a waste of money to invest in s1 pro , only to rig on a heavier gorilla mast ? (not sure either if bombproof mast might make sail ripping more likely in a good wash ? yr usually only going to snap 1 section of mast which is cheaper than a s1 pro!) .... how do the severne 90% and 100% hold up durability wise ? ... I'm considering having a 100% for small days to get crazy light .... and either have a 90 or gorilla for bigger days .... taking 0.5 kg out of sail weight , to add extra 0.3 mast weight doesnt make sense to me , unless it somehow still feels like a way lighter feel dynamically whilst sailing ?? any help / thoughts appreciated ...

If you spend the coin on s1pro ,you may as well have the lightest mast for max performance gain.
or go blade and gorilla mast combo. The masts are all pretty good and strong these days.

But if it helps: go the lighter mast. Remember the mast will last you a lot longer then the sail.

RE durability, I haven't had issues with Severne Masts and I haven't heard many reports of people breaking masts other then getting wiped out in big surf.

I currently use a 5.6 S1 Pro with a 100% carbon mast. Super light setup. Makes sneaking out in little to no wind a breeze.

I've been using a RDM 100% 370 Severne mast for the last year and a half, sailing Tenerife and the 2013/2014 WA season, it's still going strong and has definitely kissed the rocks a few times! Just got myself a 400 100% to go with it - the new S1 pros feel amazing on these :-)

Hi Stehsegler , how does the 5.6 feel in size , does the lightwgt make it feel alot smaller through moves , or it still feels like a 5.6 ? (ive always been say 5.3 max but thinking the lightwgt can let you push the boundaries a bit ? ) , what wgt are you ?

Hi Seabreezer, to me the 5.6 feels the same as my old 5.3. I'm still on 2014 S1's, so not the pro model, but feels very light to throw around.
The throw factor also depends on the boom length in my opinion, with 176cm it is as short as most 5.3. and you can clearly notice it in quick turns on small waves.

I use them with a "heavy" gorilla mast (although the gorilla mast is as heavy as my old Simmer 100% carbon rdm)
As I'm only 70kg's it gets me planing nice and early, will go for the pro model next year though, so should be even lighter.

Hi Eazy , when do you use 5.6 over say 5.3 / 5.0 , when its side-on / sml light sideshore ? .... theres alot of 70kgs guys (pro's) that would use maybe 5.0 / 4.8 as absolute biggest (especially WA) .... I think if im riding sideshore dtl , I would probably opt for 5.2 .... but thinking theres definately sessions where I would like that extra power sometimes ....

Would go at least 90%, actually the 90% masts are often the stronger ones.

Hi Seabreezer, I guess it depends on how keen you are to get out, I use my 5.6 quite a lot in any direction, side on and side off. I like my jumping as well, so I use the 5.6 mainly to get onto the plane as quick as possible. Where I normally sail there's quite a bit of current running, so it all helps to get going as fast as possible.

The 5.6 Pro Edition feels like a 4.8. It's not a power wave sail but gives you enough grunt to get you out and on a wave. It really comes into it's own when you are dogging out in next to no wind. Once you get on a wave it doesn't get in the way as a heaver power wave sail can.

RE moves, I am mainly using it as an ultra light wind wave sail with a floaty board in waves. I have used it a couple of times fully powered and forwards and backloops are not a problem. As I said it doesn't feel like a 5.6.
