once you use a cam sail you dont want to use a non cam sail and want to stick with the benefits that a cam sail gives you ?

have you used a no cam go fast sail recently - they are awesome. I personally believe cams have a lot to answer for .

You look a bit cramped up under the boom (bent front leg) - either bring the track back or lift your boom about 4 inches
- looks like this piece was edited on a potato - often with internet videos if you arent going to do it properly you are better off not doing it at all -

this may have been ok when youtube started but these days it just makes your brand look poor.

The windsurfing religion text at the end nearly had me laughing beer out my nose.

All of the above probably sounds a bit harsh but i hope this helps you moving forward.

Probably was a bit harsh in retrospect! ... but a very honest post.

I know some of my earliest videos has similar production value issues - and i regret them to this today!

They say that when something really bugs you it can often be that it is an internal reflection of something you yourself have done in the past.

Remember I sold some NCX sails for you back when we where working on Severne together, really awesome sail. I do stick by what I said though, CAM sails benefits out weigh the difficulties. I would take a Reflex before a NCX, but I understand your point of view. We all have different philosophies and that's good in life. As you know these days race sails are lighter, easy to rig and generally more user friendly now.On the water they are faster with a bigger wind range. I now only keep two slalom sails now for myself. However the NCX and that style of sail is a super fun sail and is the best choice for many sailors.

Sorry about my sailing style, in my defense I have two herniated disks in my back and I shouldn't be sailing at all. You can see on land I don't move around easy and note the gut LOL The boom did look low for my height well spotted.

I really like this video of Josh Angulo. I think he is a great communicator (Americans generally are I have found) also he is one of the best all round sailors ever. Gun Sails have roller cams in their race sails so its a different technique compared to how I rig the Avanti race sails.

I made my rigging video with my son and the little lap top we run a pretty tight ship here. We filmed Xmas eve in the morning and posted Christmas day I just wanted to get it out quick as I'm selling the Machine M1-X at cost now and I don't want it to come back with warranty issues. I have never damaged sails with my rigging technique.

On the cams sail note. I had NCX 7.5 and it's a amazing sail, no doubt about it, very light and powerful. However now I have four Reflex's and wouldn't look back. That's all I want to sail. It's much easier for me and I feel much safer and in control. But I think it really depends on the wind stability. If I sail in the area with constant wind or fluctuating within 2-3 knots, I wouldn't mind non cam sail. However if the wind changes by 5-8 knots within 2 minutes or it's very gusty, I find it quite hard to go out and fighting the sail all the way back.
Just my opinion and experience so far.

I agree entirely with what you are saying GeoGeo. In Sydney Harbour and also at the airport the wind is always patchy and the cammed sails help one to get through the holes. However having sailed in WA there is very little holes in the wind and normally plenty of it, a camless being an advantage. Different horses for different courses!

Well done on the video I had a herniated disc L51 10 years ago from sailing; best thing I did to keep sailing after surgery on it was buy a Chinook downhall crank. Pulling on the downhall with your harness loads up the lower back as soon as I did this I have never had a back issue again..

Nice looking sails Justin, and I agree, if you are after maximum speed AND stability, there is no going back from cams once you have tried them. Coming from many years of wavesailing, when I started in the GPSTC in 2012 I used camless FreeRace sails (2012 NP Hellcat), which were nice, fast and quick to rig, and I went that way because of the fear that everyone put in me about cams. What a wank that was. Once I had tried a cammed sail (2012 NP RSS) I was convinced of the benefits (outweighing the negatives of longer to rig and harder waterstarting) and sold the camless sails. The cammed sails take slightly longer to rig, but as you have just shown, 5-10 minutes to rig a cammed sail is about right, and throw in an extra 5mins for a chin wag whilst you are doing it and you have cammed sail rigged in 10-15 minutes. I still wavesail and BnJ, but when using my slalom/speed boards for blasting or GPS I always want the maximum speed and stability because that's what gives me a buzz, so I use my cammed sails.

I see a use for camless freerace sails though if you want to save some money and aren't interested (or are just starting out) in the GPS side of things.

Matt, despite your apology, I feel that I need to say that your first post would have been better sent as a PM if you felt so strongly about it. Whilst you have said you were honest, you also show zero tact. You have been around here long enough and have a high profile in our sport - put some thought in before you type. Even with your apology you still come across as a prize tool in this thread......just saying so whilst we are all being honest here.

Justin I would just like to say it was a good video in my view. I liked the fact that you rigged the sail and added the audio later instead of trying to do it all at the same time. Bit of sailiing inbetween and a derig. This is the first time I have seen this format, but don't profess to being a video buff. The method is slightly different to the normal way of rigging cammed sails, so the information is very valuable.

My only critisim is that you could have edited out the bit at the start with me in the water, and the other sections where it is very apparent that you are going a lot faster than me.

Justin, If you have a dodgy back do yourself a favor and buy a Chinook downhaul winch!!!!!

+1 on the downhaul winch.

I sail low tension maui sails and still managed to tweak my back for a few weeks from hurriedly adjusting the downhaul.

The crank lets you get the downhaul perfect each time. Once I get the downhaul right, I measure and then write the length inside the mast protector. Next time I downhaul it's much faster because I just get the measurement right instead of looking up and trying to get the looseness of the leech just right.

I used to think that guys who wrote the measurement down were aspergery nerds, but it truly is a faster way to rig and requires a minimum of foresight.
