125lt Wave/Freestyle/Freeride board for heavyweight sailors.

If you are a heavyweight sailor, 95kg plus, there is currently no board on the market that achieves what the NXS voodoo achieves.
it is designed specifically for big guys and tested specifically by big guys to achieve an easy riding board to blast on, freestyle on, or hit the waves on in light to moderate winds. the boards easy ride and user friendliness also makes it an ideal board for a one board quiver.

The board has an even volume distribution along the length and width ensuring a balanced feel both on the water and in the air. During gybes the board carves evenly both on flat and chopy water. the reduced rail and overall thickness assists both during the carve and with control when the wind and chop increases. i found the board had plenty of grip and encouraged planing exits.

early planing on the board is very impressive. one pump on the sail sees the board lift and accelerate. this board has enabled me(at 105kg) to use a 5.8m sail in 15-20 knot winds with small fins.

freeride - With bigger sails and bigger fins the boards slalom rocker allows plenty of speed for freeriding, the ride across chop is very comfortable and the board tracks without issue providing a stable and secure feeling.

freestyle - The boards early planing and acceleration helps set you up for manouevres. The board pops very well and stays in control through the air. overall it feels like it has less volume than it does. sliding is not a problem and the chamfer tail helps keep you going backwards.

Wave - The addition of the removable side fins provides extra grip to the wide tail during bottom turns. during top turns the board slides across the lip then bites and tracks back down the face when directed setting you up for the next bottom turn. having plenty of volume the board allows heavy guys to hit the surf in light winds and plane early while still being slashy enough to throw the board around and enjoy the ride.

footstrap setup - the footstrap position is wide stance orientated for more freestyle tuning. the strap plugs are also close allowing the strap to hold the side of the foot as well as the top of the foot. this gives a more secure ride and makes the board feel very responsive.

To date i have used the board with 6.4m KA Kult in 12-18 knots down to 5.3m KA Kult in 25-30 knots with MFC freewave and Freestyle fins. and i am very impressed with it. for me it has made me want to go sailing more often.

as with all allround boards there is going to be some compromise. The compromises made with this board have been thought about and tested in detail to ensure they are very minimal and the result is a great package that does everything very well. no it is not a slalom board, and no it is not a pure down the line wave board. it is however, a very good allround board for heavyweight guys maximising your time on the water and allowing maximum flexibility. It is very suitable in the typical real world conditions from bay to onshore surf. it will not dissapoint.

interesting... sliding not a problem you say might have to take it for a spin.

you thought about some outboard strap positions? i'd imagine inboard straps are fine for waves and freestyle, but are probably a bit uncomfortable with that much width for freeriding and back and forth blasting.

btw, 25-30kts? i can't remember the last time we had a 25-30kt day, musta been stuck at work

yep peter did a great job on the board. all up it took us 2 years to get it right. we've had the same NE winds here so the board has really worked well. i just need some time in bigger surf for some further testing.

she's up for the challenge so next time jump onboard. being a lightweight you will find the tail a little wide in the gybes. for us fatties it's no probs. yes the board would make a bette rfreeride board with double rear straps. the production version will have double and single options. with small fins it's no biggy, but with 6.5m and up and 32cm + fins it's nicer to get out a little wider.

not sure on weight. it is heavier than for eg a JP production but only by a small amount i'd say. maybe half kilogram. i'll weigh it and get back to you. main reason it is a little heavier is because it's built very strong.

forgot to say swoosh, it pumped at the wanderers redcliffe meet. 25+ knots and 3-4 foot swell with 1-2 foot waves in the shorey.

See if I'd known you were taking that I'd have made an effort to get to VP today. ShearWater was awesome ...for about 20 minutes, then very, very average.

Tomorrow looks the goods for ShearWater. Going?

it's interesting to hear that, as a few of us were thinking shearwater was getting better conditions. you should've come along it was a bit on and off but all up enough wind was had.

i'm probably going to VP again tomorrow, keen to try the board with tri fin setup for bump and jump.

i tried a new fin in the board today, i wasn't very happy with the fin and thought it didn't get the most out of the board. but it could have been me as others didn't think the fin was so bad. all up though everyone that has sailed the board to date has enjoyed it.

you are more than welcome to take the board for a blast whenever we catch up next.

haven't had the board out in the surf as yet, last attempt resulted in no wind and even the sups got left on the roof.

but, i am loving the board. it's versatility has me very happily surprised. for my 105kg this board has become the only board i use regardless of conditions so my dreams of a one board quiver have been realised.

one thing i am finding with the board is that it feels smaller than it is both on the water and through the air. this is also somehting that others have commented on that have sailed it.

i've also had a lot more time testing the tri fin setup. it's amazing how much the range of the board can be increased with the tri fins in. in over powered 25+ knot conditions swapping from single fin to tri fin adds grip to burn and gives so much confidence. the extra grip really allows heavy footed slashing off the top of swells and extra grip gybing in the rough stuff.

yesterday i finally got a new freestyle fin and today went out to muck around and try some vulcans.

the last 3 days we have had wind from 6 knots to 25 knots and i've used the board comfortably throught that wind range and enjoyed it. it's early to plane, comfortable to sail and very forgiving.

last 3 days.

Sunday - cruising

6.4m KA Kult, 32cm MFC freewave, 6-18 knots. dredging in 6 knots planing in the 12 knot gusts. used the board for freeriding on flat to choppy water practicing planing tacks and gybes. managed my first planing tacks.

Monday - bump and jump

5.3m KA Kult, tri fin setup, 20-25 knots. well powered in knee high+ swell/chop, bump and jump session, lots of carving turns along the chop trying to hit the peaks hard, planing gybes no issue through the swell, as the board tracked and gripped. tri fin also fly's upwind and settles the board down in the rough stuff.

Tuesday - freestyle (if you can call it that! )

5.3m KA Kult, 24cm choco royal flush, 12-18 knots, small 30-40cm chop. well i am stunned! to be planing on a 5.3m in that wind at 105kg was sensational. i should have been on a 5.8 but couldn't be bothered re rigging and went out thinking i'd practice light wind sail handling. to my surprise i was planing!!! granted i was off the plane in the lulls but once a gust came through i was away and kept on the plane. I spent an hour blasting back and forth trying aerial re-entries of the swells and vulcans at the beach.

am loving the versatility and the ability to go from single fin to tri fin adds so much to the overall performance of the board. to be honest, ther than slalom/race kit i doubt i would ever buy a non convertible board again.

Ive seen this board a few times now and im eager to have a go if you dont mind. Saw you and some other blasting around on sunday at GB, board looks great; maybe at the next ww meet??
