Not so much as a review but a prelude to a review, My new Maui Ultrafin arrived in the mail box yesterday from the UK. It cost me $164 AUS and arrived in approx 7 days packed very well and in perfect condition. I don't know anything about weed fins as I've not ever sailed with one, After moving to the Illawarra it's a must to have a weed fin for the lake and it's shallow and weedy conditions. I've ordered another fin from Makani Fins that's more wavey and should suit my freewave board a bit better as the Ultrafin looks very much like a freeride/race fin.

So I just hope these mad westerly winds hang around till sunday so I can get the fins out for a run, I'll post an update as soon as I get out on the water.

I just bought a flying objects weed fin in 28cm for my 09 JP FSW 92. It looks nice, but that one you got looks very nice also. The flying objects is a little thinner in the tip section and not as elliptical.

How do you find the base fits in your JP? I am finding my FO sits a little deep in the box at the front, so the leading edge of the fin is maybe 0.5 mm recessed in the box. Does anyone know if this will negatively impact fin performance. Is there any way to fix it? I was thinking a drop of araldite on the bottom of the wedge in the fin base at the front may help?? I am not sure if power box fins bottom out in the box, or the edge shape wedges tight meaning that a brush of araldite on each side of the wedge may tighten it up so it does not sink as deep?? It is not much, and I would use it as is, but just wondering if it worth correcting.

That seems like a reasonably price for a good quality fin.

I have a Select weedy. I find it not particularly good in underpowered and marginal conditions. It has the feeling of sucking the board down at the back. A pointer on the other hand makes the board more lively.

When sailing in overpowered conditions I find this to be a good trait as the board is more settled in the water.

I'm keen to buy a set of new fins as my current ones are a mixed bag of all sorts over the last 15 years.

i bought a small 85 litre 2003 AB slalom board new for $200.

found the board to be too lively in gusts.

tried fins from 28cm down to 25cm and same problem.

last resort,put a small carbon weed fin in and board stays down in gusts,way easier on legs,faster too.

tried the same weedfin in my 95 litre Kinetic and poor performance.

if you have not used a weed fin before it feels like you are sliding laterally,downwind.
