Is the batten broken? if you want to remove the batten back off the screw tensioner so it's nearly stcking out and then simply push it in towards the batten and the rope loop will be easy to remove, once that is done you can remove the batten.

Thanks choco, i just want to increase the tension, there is no hex nut or screw inside, so i assume I need to pull out the lot and give it a few turns...

There should be a hex nut, seems that it's fallen out for some reason

All done, I guess i was too sissy... anyway the system is not ideal, need to remove the lot and turn the tensioner around his thread. I checked the other battens and they are all the same. Thanks for the assistance

Powersloshin, Can I suggest that you remove the batten and check the connector between the tube and the rod. Sometimes the connector wears out and allows the rod to push through. The batten goes loose and as you tighten with the hex screw all you do is push the rod further in. You eventually run out of thread.

If this is the case give me a yell and we will organise to get some new connectors to you.

Mystery solved: I need new glasses, couldn't see the hex, looked like a round thread to me. Apologies to everyone, I love KA sails, better buy another sail than new glasses now that I know.
