I just purchased a KA kult 6.4 from Stonkers at Torquay. I am 8 months into the sport and have been running on a 430 mast with a couple of second hand sails up to 5.4m. I decided to go with a new sail now that I'm getting really confident in almost 30 knots with the 5.4 (allbeit challenging on that size when it's 30).

Anyway, because I need to budget many things the sail sucked up all my play cash for now, it will be some weeks, maybe a month before I can look at a new longer mast. The current specs say 430 imcs21. I just went to set it up to tune the battens but with my extension all the way out I still had a sizable fold along the luff tube when the downhaul was all the way down.

I'm really keen to use it but the delay because I need to buy more gear sooner than I anticipated is a little frustrating.

Just thought I'd let you all know what to expect if you went with KA gear. the upper limit on the sails seems to be tipping over to the alternate mast options.

Hi Viking,

that's a bugger for sure. but is easily resolved with a longer mast extension.

i have been using kults since about 2001. they have all rigged on my 430 which is the suggested mast.

i use a 45cm extension set at 40cm with the 430 mast.

for me, being able to rig the 6.4 on a 430 mast is a great outcome.

hope this helps as you won't need to buy a new mast.

Ah thats a thought, I might track down a longer extension.

LOL there are plenty of things with this fine sport that still catch me out. Evidentally today its my knowledge of mast extensions. Stonker usually orders a lot of their stuff in on demand, and having my current extension never set more than half way out meant I never browsed them online. Silly me.

430 SDM is the recomended mast and is fine with a long extension set on 40, they are available up to 48cm.
430 RDM is an issue however as most readily available long RDM extensions go to 38 so we may need to revisit that now that RDM's are widely used.
I will note that on the website specs, so thanks for highlighting it.

I got the SDM mast. And what I thought at the time was the only size extension that there was available.

Thanks for the info. I'll enquire about the 48 after the weekend. Working tomorrow so I wont miss the light winds predicted.

it could happen to anyone.

i pretty much buy the longest extensions i can. i've passed up many a bargain on a 30cm carbon extension because of that.

Be careful buying more than one long extension. Some masts narrow down and will only allow medium to short extensions. Make sure you keep the smaller extension as well.

430cm + 40cm @21
vs
460cm + 10cm @25

Any noticeable difference? I too would like to get everything on one or two masts.

I got myself a 48cm extension. Works a treat set around 40, it's not marked and it's not exactly 40 at the closest setting to it.

When I use my 4.7 north I'll need to use the other 30cm extension set at 7.5cm. The new 48 won't slot into my mast below about 15cm.

Thanks for the help guys. Never got anywhere with my query to KA directly.

well mr Love is a KA man and you got a response from him.

i was also going to say. weith the kults i typically just set the downhaul to the spec length and tune with the outhaul.

hope that helps also.

did you get the 09 or 08?

i haven't used the 09 yet.
