Jp magic ride

Hi!
I am buying a magic ride, but I'm not sure about the size. I am 90kg and I will use it in light wind (3-4 bft) as well, so I may have to uphaul the 8.2m2 sail. I thought buying the 130, but I was told that the 119 should be enough because it has different shape. Any suggestions from someone with more experience?

90 kilos + 29 = 119 liters
for me that is at the limit for uphauling - but that is just me
at 100 kilos - 132 liter board was my limit - and it was not easy
but my real concern is the sail size
on the 119 your sail is at the upper limit of the sail range
recently someone wrote on this forum that these chip boards do NOT do well @ their upper sail limit
problem with our sport is - cannot try before we buy
and for me - it ain't cheap !!
i like to take board width and divide by 10 to see what may be ideal sail size
the 130 liter with 78 cm width is closer to the 8 mark

Thanks! I think I'll stick to the 130 than. The 119 is on the limit .
The sail is not the ideal, but is in the recomended range according to the jp's site. 5.5-8.5 , but with the 130 it's in the ideal.

If you are a competent sailor, i.e. water starts, gybing etc, and want a one board solution, the 119 will do the job. It will handle the 8.2 in the light stuff and will be more fun when it blows.
If you get the 130, you will be looking for a smaller board when it blows. This is also OK If your budget can stretch to a second board.
Remember the rule, he who has the most toys wins.

In theory, thin wide boards can take big sails. In practice, there is little benefit. You won't get going earlier, and you may not be any faster - they are not slalom boards meant to be sailed overpowered. I'd get the 130.

Sailing in 3-4 bf scale, I would maybe try a different light wind board.
I'm a 90 kg sailor & use an 80cm wide Futura 141 for winds 13-17 knts.
Sails 9.2 - 7.5.
So many choices....

had to look up beaufort scale - AGAIN

3 is 8-12 mph or 7-10 knots (too light except longboard or foil)
4 is 13-18 mph or 11-16 knots (still light wind) = longboard, foil or SLW & yes - probably with BIG sail

did NOT realize we were talking about such light winds !!
if not planing in light winds - narrower is better !!

Hi, for your information, JP is introducing a new board named the Super Ride, which is a bit narrower than the Magic Ride and will replace both the x-cite ride and the all ride. Bonus, the finbox is foil ready, in case you also want to try it.

Interesting that the widths are back to normal proportions. Looks like they are abandoning the wide concept as embodied in the Magic Rides. Sensible in my opinion.

I read they merge Xcite and Allride into this one; which sits between the Magic and SS... Not sure how you came to this conclusion?

Magic Rides are great boards. I had the 111 before i moved up to full race slalom boards and it gybed like a dream. :D

Hey Bronze, I'm 104kg and have used a 2016 154 ES Magic Ride for the last couple of years and have recently started using a 2010 155 GO for lighter conditions.

The MR good - absolutely fantastic fun board that is very maneuverable under your feet, turns very quickly and easily, planes super fast with very little effort. The not so good - whilst it planes with very little power, it falls off the plane just as quick so doesn't like light wind with holes in it.

I used my MR with a 9m NCX with a 60cm race fin for light wind and when trialed back to back with the GO with a 56cm race fin, the GO was way better in light wind with holes.

The GO good - stays on the plane through the holes in light conditions, planes in lighter wind (wider tail), heavy board with a bigger V so surprisingly good in chop. The GO not so good - not as agile under your feet, needs a real good kick to get it on the plane (but once it gets there it doesn't want to stop)

I've back to backed these boards with a 7.5 NCX right on the limit of having to change up a sail size and the same thing occurs, the GO will plane where the MR would be off and on the plane. For really light/gusty/marginal wind there's better options than the MR, but if the wind is consistent the MR is the best fun to ride (not necessarily the fastest). Bronze, for the light winds you will use it in and for your 90kg weight, I reckon you'll be disappointed with a small MR and should be looking for a board with a wider tail.

Hey Sean, those JP Ride boards look awesome, is that JP's competitor to Starboard's GO range?
