My current Garmin 310 records at 1 second intervals


My older Garmin 201 recorded at 2 second intervals.

Replace it with a Motion Logger. It logs position every 10th of a second.

Another issue is the mapping software. Let's say you recorded a session with one point per second. If you load that gpx file into Google Earth, it will only display every 5th or 10th or whateverth point, and the algorithm is variable. Drives me crazy.

However, if you first convert the gpx file directly into kml or kmz, and then load that file into Google Earth, you get all the detail you recorded.

I use open source GPSBabel to do file conversions. It works well. Note that version 1.6.0 is the first version to read FIT v2 files, which is what Garmin watches and cameras (and many other devices) are now producing. Version 1.5.x reads only FIT v1. It is now out in 1.7.0 for Windows and Mac. But still 1.5.3 for Debian 9. Ubuntu 20 has 1.6.0. Other software, such as strava, also convert FIT v1 and v2 into gpx.

Just changed it I didn't know there were two settings it was in "smart recording". Have it in 1sec now, thanks.

This is my tracks(58.3km) from yesterday at a different location in smart recording mode. The tracks look slightly better for whatever reason, it was flat water 15kts. I'm keen to see if I can get those pretty looking circles like JJ aka azymuth has using 1 second data next time
