Firstly, it might be worth a quick forum search as there have been LOADS of Gun based forum topics.

Secondly, as lots of people will probably now know I have a full quiver of gun sails matched to Loft masts and booms, with gun extensions and mast foot, plus a load of board bags, quiver and mast bags. My sails are Wave MCs from 2006 and a mate has the Booster. Anyone who see's my sails on the beach around Sydney comment on how good they look - both design and the way they are built.

My sails have been given a thorough pasting on numerous occasions and the worst I have had is a broken batten.

Basically they are cheaper than "premium brands" but offer excellent performance and build quality. If you've ever been windsurfing in Europe you'll notice how big a brand they are....

If you want more specifics then PM me.

I also forgot to say it may be worth wording the question as "any comments about gun gear from people who have actually used it?".

Yep Crash Landing, I know that you have long experience with Gun Sails. Certainly I can precise my question - today we had discussion at local shop about base joins of Gun. They are cheap and people argued that they made from rabber that is not durable as big brands that use poliuretane (okinda of). Finally salesman said that they putem only on kids boards. After this discussion I am confused and searching through the forum couldn't find any clear comments about the bases (or Gun gear in general). (Welll, except your sail propaganda :) ) Cheers :)

hi alexg,

if you do a search you will find that there is loads of reviews about gun sails. they perform very well in the magazine tests and always get special mention about quality.

now, my biased or not view is that the guys at windsurfing sails have given me a couple of gear bags for giveaways at the windwanderers meets. they sponsor the club. but only sponsor it by giving gear to the members.

so i have seen the gun equipment bags and had a very good look at them. they are made to the highest quality. so much so that i have ordered some for myself. i really was impressed.

as far as the uni joints go? every piece of gun kit i have seen has been very high quality. i did a quick search of the gun website and they say that their uni's are the original boge joints made in germany. not copies or imitations. also, they actually make more than one type of uni?

here are some reviews of the gun gear, including sails, booms, masts etc.

http://www.gunsails.co.uk/en/tests.htm

i hope this all helps you with an informed decision

cheers
gestalt.

I like the "sail propoganda" comment alexg. I know you were joking but just to let you know I don't get any free things and I'm not sponsored by them! I had a bonus from work about 12 months ago and as I'm from the UK I needed to get a whole quiver. Let's just say I could afford a Gun/Loft quiver of rigs or about 2 NP sails...

My experience comes from Gun sails back in the UK where my first sail was a GUN MEGA RACE from about 1995, it was heavy but damn fast!! Then they [Gun] really pulled their finger out and produced much better equipment. I'm pretty sure they own some patents on some key windsurfing parts.

As for deck plates/UJ's I've only had mine for 3 months but so far so good!

alexg,

My Gun mast base contains a genuine BOGE uni-joint. Mine gets more of a work out than most because I fall off so much. Wouldn't be impressed if your local shop owner was making stuff up to try and flog their own gear.

Regards,
Harrow.

GUN is big in Europe, and when I say big, think of the most popular brand you know in Australia, and multiply that by 10 at least lol. Saying that, I have recently come across some cheaper items in their product lines - booms for example, retail for $150! Not however 100% convinced it was the original Gun quality. They must have started production in India or china lol. But then what isnt made from China these days. Before Loft/Gun came out with such pricing, the cheapest boom in the market was like $200-$250. Good on you Gun, the more the competition, the better in quality and pricing goods will become for the end users!

I'm happy to say that I was the first Aussie Gun sails customer (via windsurfingsales) early last year. Like Crash Landing I have a full set of Wave MCs matched to Gun masts and Loft booms. I've had no issues to date and the masts have copped a couple of good wipeouts down at Wanda. Contrary to vicious rumours spread by certain members of the NSW Wavesailing fraternity they are not made in Kazakstan.
Prices of the '07 models are quite a bit dearer than '06 but still relatively cheap.
