Incase your really into film making the latest firmware update for the Hero2 gives you a handy feature called Protune. What it does is record at a higher Mbps rate for better picture quality and also records with a neutral color balance for better post production adjustments also the have added 24fps to the frame rate, Make things a lot easier to match up clips from different sources. The camera films fine out of the box if you don't want to mess with it too much in the editing stage but if you like to change the look of your films it really helps to shoot with a neutral colour balance. The biggest problem with post production is with over exposed shots, Once you loose detail in the original shot you can't get it back in post. It's always better to shoot with less colour and exposure and fix it after, ProTune allows you to do this. This was also my first test of the iPhone App, It works a treat...With more functions to come it's only going to get better. The shots were framed on my iPhone as well as using it to operate the camera remotely, You have full control of the camera and access to all the menus right on your phone.

Anyways.....Here is a vid I shot today, I've posted the video twice without and with post production colour correction....You'll see the difference.

I think it's and excellent feature that they have added, Not only for the film making gurus but for the average punter like me to improve my weekend flicks.

JH2703, you need to do a colour calibration of your monitor. There is too much saturation in the final clip. The footage also seems slightly underexposed.

JH, do you need to convert the files first with Cineform Studio before importing them to Sony Vegas?

i think pro tune is a great addition / option -well done to GoPRo for going there.

To be fair - looking at the videos above - i get pretty similar results from grading my non protune footage once its comes out of the vimeo pipeline

- its probably the vimeo compression that is killing the polish that Protune gives you. You'd see it on the monitor / timeline for sure.

I think this comparison is a stronger demo of the difference between graded and ungraded footage than the difference Pro Tune makes. Certainly i do know the GP3 has a lot better low light and dynamic range (from what i have seen on line)

Saturation is a funky one - i personally like the super saturated stuff -as i like to make footage larger than life

- other editors/ viewers like a low saturation look - and everyone will have a preference.

Go with your own vision - the worst thing you can do is to try and please everyone - because it virtually doesnt matter what you put up - people will line up to criticise you on the the internet.

which is why i like web videos as you can go as hard with the "look" as you like

- as opposed to stuff shot for broadcast -which has super tight parameters for saturation and exposure before it will even be allowed to go to air.

Hey Pete,

Not sure about the standard version of Vegas, I use the Pro Edition thus It reads all the file types....No need for me to convert first. Some basic video editors need you to convert the files to Mp4 before editing, Thus the need for Cineform.

...When are you coming to Gerroa for a sail?

Thanks for the feedback Matt, You know more about this sort of stuff then I ever will. Yes It was more of a colour grade test then anything but I thought that was the whole point of Protune, Post production adjustments?? Anyways it's all just a bit of fun for me and will never be taken seriously by any stretch...But thanks for the tips you've given me about the use of the DSLR, It's improved the stuff I've captured heaps. I can't wait to get the GP3, I have one on pre-order and I am eagerly awaiting it'release this month.
