Hi! Finally got my 105 Fanatic Freewave from 2020 on the water last evening and have some doubts on the fin configuration I chose. This is the first trifin I own and first time I was on one with light wind.

I am 82kg, sailed on 6.3 and it would be onshore 15 knots gusting 18 with pretty rough chop and breakwater. Single fin 29.

I was planning easily but would be on the verge of spinning out most of the time while going upwind. I just didn't feel enough grip to push it far upwind. My question is, would you go for a larger fin or add the side fins keeping the 29 or even going below that? What would increase my grip to go upwind? I understood that on the larger fin sizes I should keep to single fins.

That should be lots of fin. Are you coming from more freeride oriented boards? Because wave biased boards just won't go upwind off the fin like you're used to.

Try it with the tri-fin set up. I have the 115 L and use it with 21 cm center and 12 cm sides with a 6.7 and 6.1. Feels with those fins.

Move your harness lines back 1 inch.
you need to load up the front hand more to encourage drive through the front foot to avoid spinout.

Fin too small. Next size up for a 6.3.

I often use my RRD FSW 90 with a slalomish set up. ACX 6.0 and K4 Fang 30 fin in overpowered conditions. I am 70 Kg. With 10 Kg more, a wider board and a bigger sail you should get a 32 cm fin. Or try to add very small side fins. I have 6 cm K4 shark sides on my 80 L Starboard FSW and they do increase grip without slowing down the board too much. However in the 15-18 knots range I would stay single fin. A Fang is nothing special but it is cheap and works well.

I have a 105 FFW 2018 (stubby nose) and for the lightest days for this board I use a 30 cm fin with 6 m sail (this fin also works with 5.6m as well). I am only 65kg and I need about 15 knots wind to sail normally. So I guess you can get up to 32cm fin with this sail but also you just need a little bit more wind and/or skill to pump the board to planing.

I had similar issue with another brand trifin freewave using it single fin, more upright single fin solved it.
Fin forward in the box may help, for this i can recommend Tribal Kruze.

I prefered 30cm upright fin for 95lt to use with 6.5 and 28cm to use with 5.5 sail (i am 61kg), both were ok vice versa. I could olso use 6.5 as trifin with a 21cm center fin but upwind was poor.

Thanks everyone! I will look around for a larger fin but also noted on the harness lines. Tbh I normally have them very far back but this time I had been trying foiling before (for second time, so was freaked out the whole of the ride) and might have left the lines a bit forward.

Will also give it a try with the side fins as it seems also like a viable option!

I find it hard to see why crew so much fin on these boards - I have the 2020 105 fanatic (previously had the stubbie version) and use a reef shortened stock 21cm (probably 19.5 now) and 12cm sides 4.5-5.7 - rarely 6.2 blade and don't have a problem getting going, spinout or going upwind - I am similar weight (depending on time of the year and stout consumption).
Tried a single fin a couple of times in it but think it feels better with original thrusters + quicker to plane - might be the rear position of the single that makes it feel sluggish compared to tri fin. Rarely sail flatwater so it maybe the tri fin set up works better in the lumpy stuff.

With 12 sides, I can use a 20 rear on wide tail boards.
With 10 sides, I seem to need 23's.
With single on moderate tails, I use 28.
With narrow tail boards, 20 is plenty by itself.
