Hi all, There was a post awhile back about weather or not an intermeadite sailor would notice the differance of different fins.

Iam an intermeadiate hack and after having moved needed to get a weed fin.
Jez at 2ndwind sorted me out with a "Choco Weed freerace 36".

I noticed the differance as soon as i got both feet in the straps (outboard) and was able to really feel the extra drive off the fin. the more i locked in the more i went. Smoothly too. Only spun out once or twice after an awkward landing off chop. But was suprised at how well it did grip and kept driving over most chop..

The board i use is 122L Futura matched with 7.5m T3 Tush. The standard fin for the futura is a drake 40. usally the board felt "skittish " and I had to be gentle on the back foot. With the Choco just lock n load..

Not saying the choco weedie is the best weed fin out there, But is a hell of an improvement over the standard fin supplied by starboard and an improvement that sailors at a level of hookin in and in the straps would instantly notice.

Has not helped improve my gybing tho.

I have a 122 as well, and I used to only use weedies on it, but its a bad habit to get used to driving so hard off the back foot.

The Drake that comes with it is a piece of s@#t, just get a good slalom fin and you will notice the difference as well, and save the weedie for weed

I see there's too much weed at Pinneroo for a slalom fin, But if i start goin to the river maybe I should invest in one as well.. Do you recomend any Slalom Fin to suit the Futura.

Go with a freeride, rather than a pure slalom, that is what I find works best.
Like a select Freeslam, or anything else that style.

Hi Stone, how are you? I assume your spot don't have weed and you are using a kind'a blade weed because this is the other fin you have in your quiver, is that right? Makanifins (company in Canada), a friend of mine did several test with different type of board and fins and weed fins before going in business to test and understand some concept and usually, weed fin are not far behind "conventional" fins, unless you take a blade weed to go wave sailing or a wave weed and go drag racing, you see the point!

However, what stroked me the most in all those years of trying new boards, is the lack of quality fin we got under our production board! I think company assume that most of the rider are very average and they "over fin" their board for protection. As soon as a sailor got some hours locked in, most of the time he is better with a set of his own fin!
Finally, if I got it wrong and you sail in a spot with a lot of weeds, it is not the fin the problems, it's the weed!

Hi stone,
I use the same board and sail combo, and for river( or non-weedy water) sailing use a Select S10 in a 43cm for lightish conditions. Also an older select superfast in a 39cm, which is quite similar to the new S11. A S09 in a 39cm would also probably be not bad either but I haven't tried one. Have only used the S10 a few times in very light aswell as very powered up conditions and I was suprised that it handled so well for such a big fin. The superfast/S11 has been used by me for at least 5-6 years now, and I have not used anything that I like more than it.
It works good in the starboard and I am just a recreational free rider not a racer so dont be put of from full on race fins by thinking they won't help your jybes. The board turnes that good that you don't really notice the race fin, except for the extra planning power and speed you will get.
