Hi all. hoping you could help with a bump and jump type board selection. I have just returned to sailing after a 10 year break. didn't think i'd still have it but i basically picked up from where i left off. I was impressed. Anyhow, the boards have changed a lot since and not sure what i am looking at as far as a bump and jump style board. Slalom is not my thing nor is hard wave. I Need something in between. I am currently riding a Hifly 265 (88L) goes well but looking for something lighter and easier to jibe.

Look for freestyle wave boards, fsw. They seem to be the marketing successor to the old bump and jump boards.

progressive freeride board could be the go, FSW still have a lot of rocker making it a bit bouncy, but i would drop into a shop and have a chat with the fellas, theres plenty a shop here,

Tabou 3S gets my vote. Mine is good for 30 knots in rough water and when I got around to taking it wave sailing it really surprised me how much I was able to snap it around for a 106 litre.

new fanatic freewave isn't bouncy at all, much smoother than older ones. Blasting to bump & jump would go something more like the hawk though.

You want a fsw. 95litre.

Sinkers are a pain and a thing of the past.

I gave heard wonderful things about tabou 3s. I trying one when I go yo Maui in April.

For now I just love my 101 fsw by jp.

i like the write up on the tabou. it is becoming my favourite choice plus a few people have reccommended the 3S also as well as my mate who knows my sailing style and ability.

any idea the cost for one. and will the 96l be ok for me at 75kg?

I used a Tabou 3S and a Starboard Kode last year in Maui - I preferred the Kode.

You're in WA and have plenty of choices for shops - demo as much as you can. Different people like different boards.

what size? The Kodes I tried 3 years ago are very different from the latest ones.
At least the larger sizes are. Wide short and fat.

I think at 75kg a 86L 3s would provide a wide range of use. In terms of the 2014 models the 96 & 106L are a new shape to last years boards and feel really good on the water, loose,fast and just easy to use. Have Fun

All fsw boards are fantastic

RRD , JP , STARBOARD , FANATIC, EXOCET ......... all great boards

Demo until you find one that works for you ..... Like a tabou 3s 96l did for me .

Thanks mate! I had a lot of water on the lens that day as it was quite windy and I was stacking a few gybes.

Btw does anyone know if Iva davies still windsurfs?

Thanks Jez. came in the shop the other day and spoke to you. I'm Vince. still considering but confused about volume. some say around 90-95l and others say about 10 liters above my weight (73-75kg). doing my head in. will speak again soon

Hey Vince. I'm 76 kg, and just recently bought another board for bump, jump and ocean blasting- plus a little wave riding. I had been using a 111 litre Futura, which is certainly not the ideal board, but definitly good fun, fast and nice and stable. The new board coming however, is a 101 litre fsw (2011 RRD) which many would still view as too big.

I think if your pretty good at sailing (make 95 percent of ocean gybes, jump with confidence etc) and the places you sail have good clean winds 15 plus knots most outings, go 90-95 litre fsw. But if your sailing skills aren't right up there, and the wind can be a little gusty where you sail, I'd definitly go a slightly bigger board. A 100-105 litre fsw board won't feel too big unless the wind is really cranking, say 25 plus. Anything from 14-25 knots it will feel sweet. So I guess it depends on wind strengh and skill levels as to what size board you chose.

The 96l FSW would be perfect, you'll a lot more use out of it than if you go a smaller board. Those boards are compact and great fun.

I'm 90kg and sail a Kode FSW 103l with a 6.0m Severn Gator sail as my bump & jump board on Morton Bay, Brisbane in 17 to 25kts. Its great fun in the 0.5 to 1m confused chop on Morton Bay.

With your 75kgs, you should be able to use a 90 to 96lit FSW board in the same conditions.

Hey, thank you all who have replied. great opinions. i guess that it comes down to the individual and what works for you/them/your style. heaps of info. the guys at the shops have also been really helpfull too. Need to work out my budget and see if i'm going to use the boat or not. if not! sell and lash out..
