Yes, another board!!!! Got to fuel my board design addition somehow. This one is going to be built by Phil Carbon in France. Phil is the French KA distributor and has been talking with me for a while about doing a board together and I have been impressed with the custom boards he has been designing and building. When I saw the big Wave board he did for a client a month or so ago I went,'Yes, I love it, I want one!!!!" It is such a cool looking board.
So I have modeled up a 63.5 wide 99 liter Wave /Slalom board which will replace my beloved RRD 96. Wave Slalom??? well it is half way between a Wave board and a Slalom board, it,s a blasting and jumping board for Port Phillip Bay. Fastish almost slalom rocker with a wave outline and higher nose rocker. Thinned out tail and lots of volume stacked between the front straps and mast track. Double concave to flat V it will be a chop muncher and some small cutouts coupled with the rocker will mean it is pretty damned fast.

The graphics are virtually the same as the street art graphics Phils "man" did on the Wave board shown here. I knocked up a sketch to see how it would look.

I am really excited to see how it progresses, Phil will start towards the end of the month. With this , my KA Slalom 70 proto and the new 85 liter wave board Stuart at Cheeky Monkey is building me I will have my rough water quiver totally sorted, all customs.

Not a problem on a test run, any time on any of my boards, love to get the feedback good or bad.
This board is really designed for the 18-22 knot seabreezes Northern end of Port Phillip conditions. It will live in my car over summer so I can stop at Pookipa on the way home from work As we know it gets rough and "full blown" slalom boards are a handful in these conditions and not much fun. The idea of this is that it is still pretty fast for blasting and racing Spotti and Jman but will be a lot more comfortable at speed in the waves than slalom gear and combined with a more freeride fin the thinner tail and touch more tail rocker will allow "snappier " turn than a slalom board. I see it as something that I can sail with a freeride fin and camless sails like my Kult 6.4 but can also sail with a cammed sail and an upright slalom fin. My aim is to run it with a Killer 5.7 and Kult 6.4 in freeride mode and a 6.3 or 7.1 Ka Race in Slalom mode with an upright fin.
I really do think it will be my far most used board, like my RRD FSW 96 currently is. This board being a bit wider should allow a size up in both sail and fin than the FSW but I will see how balanced it feels with the 7.1. Although I have done so I rarely run a cammed sail on the FSW, only really when I have been desperate to test a sail and it's been too rough for the speed gear. I think this board will work fine with "racier" rigs.
I guess I will find out.

Designed specifically for Pookipa!!!! Take it for a spin for sure. Now to figure out how to get it from France, that would be a distance record perhaps Kato will offer to sail it back.

Interesting thoughts on the design and intended use martin. Very similar thoughts as to why I got my 3S 106. Primarily for pookipa, either as a decent freeride with comfort or as a bump and jump. I suppose you would be going PB for the fin setup?

Looking forward to seeing the board and really enjoy the board design posts.

Keef, never enough. Actually haven't that many. Got the 43 and 53 wide speed boards, Sandy Point and Lake George boards only although I have used the 53 at Rye. Then the RRD FSW 96 the Blue slalom 70 and an F2 82 wide slalom. Also the first slalom 70 Stuart built me which I need to sell and one of the 59 wide Slalom boards from Stuarts mold which is his board. When I get this board and the 85 liter Wave board Stuart is building I will sell the RRD. So in total I will end up with the 2 speed boards and a 4 board Bay quiver not counting Stuarts board that I must get back to him. So 2 speed specific boards and 4 Bay boards which will get me from 12 to 40 knots. But I can tell you now that this board and the Slalom 70 will be used 80% of the time but they all get used. If I didn't speed sail 3 boards would be enough for Melbourne and get you out in most conditions.

Evan, yep reckon the FSW formula is perfect for the Bay. This one is a bit racier, if you had to compare with something maybe the Rocket would be closest???. Been debating final layup with Phil this morning, still deciding how much Carbon as I don't want a harsh ride. The bottom shape should soften the ride quite well so maybe we can do a carbon outer on the bottom, more thought needed on that.

All good fun, keeps me busy. If I didn't do this I might be forced into house maintenance or something equally nauseating.

Made a late design change, doing a different cutout design. I have extended the cutout to 400 off with an S outline. The cutout will not be constant depth but have extra rocker, it stars off shallow and finishes deeper. As a consequence have reduced the tail rocker on the bottom by 1mm. The idea is the tail of the board only has a hint of tail rocker now almost a slalom board tail but when the rail is engaged the extra tail rocker at the bottom of the cutout comes into play and the board turns sharper.
Its a bit harder for Phil to build as he can't router in a constant depth cutout has to hand shape them but he is also keen to try it and see if it has any effect.

I agree,

wood glass final laminate top and bottom is my pick also.

wood and carbon don't play nicely together for some reason.

We are still discussing the final layup.

Deck going on, really starting to look like a board. Phil away for a bit next 2 weeks so it will slow down, doubt I will have it for Melb Cup weekend but that is cool.

Phil is not setup to CNC, does not have a machine. The board was designed in CAD like all my designs then I generated section and rocker drawings for him to print, make templates and set up his rocker jig. Also did a detailed spread sheet of all the dimensions measured from my CAD model both of an offset inside core shape and outside finished surface.
And the rest is Phil's skill at hand shaping.

That rocker line jig is genius.

Phil has finally been able to get some momentum back on this board and it will be finished soon.

Ive examined and repaired a lot of boards in my time and one thing i have noted is boards vac bagged with a single rocker jig not placed in a more secure bedding jig end up with some degree of twist, When i used to hand shape polyester boards we used to use twist sticks to check for this.

Doesn't surprise me Rider but what is the alternative for 1 off prototypes, you are not going to machine up a full bottom mold for 1 board?. I have wondered that you would maybe be better shaping the bottom first with the rest of the blank still as a rectangular block, then sitting it on a flat table or concrete slab when you vacc the bottom on. You would think this would eliminate twist. Not sure what you do the prevent it though when you vacc the deck on without a full jig?

And now the debate about painting the bottom or not. Sort of too beautiful to cover up!!!

Nice Martin ! Looks like you've changed the cutout again and now its a wing cutout ?

Yep changed them again, cant help myself. The difference with these is that the bottom of the cutout is not a direct offset of the bottom of the board, the cutout is shallower at the front than the rear with a curved profile that gives the rail more rocker. The idea being that when you tip the board and engage the rail it has about 3mm more rocker. We will see if it works!
