It even worked with my grunty 6.2m freerace sail with winds gusting from 15-30 knts.
Just put that 6.2 freerace in the nearest bin and do yourself a favour. Go out and buy a 5.8 Atlas with a 400 rdm. I really thought this was going to be a dud and wouldn't work but I am just blown away. The reduced weight of the monofilm combined with the lower weigth of the short mast, low aspect ratio of the sail, shorter boom just outright blew me away. It was like a match made in heaven with the 99 JP Thruster.
I am currently a bit over 100kg (cough cough 110 cough cough). I had a quick session at Shoalhaven heads last weekend. Wind was about 10 to 18 knts. In the past I wouldn't have even considered rigging but I really wanted to know if how good/ bad this sail was. Anyway, long story cut short I went on the plane in no time and stayed on the plane without effort. Jibing on the outside, quick pump of the sail and I was on the plane again. There were hardly any whitecaps on the ocean so I was quite surprised I was even planing. I'd say this is as good as a 6.2 Alpha if not better and almost a no brainer for people with a bit more weight.
In a nutshell I am contributing the performance of this sail to the following:
- the 400 mast reduces the weight of the rig
- the reduced weight of the sail compared to a 2010 model or the 6.2
- the more compressed outline of the sail makes it quite stable
- despite the 400 mast there seems to be less twist and the sail overall seem quite stiff yet still is easy to handle in gusts.
- the shorter boom makes it much more enjoyable in waves (compared to the 6.2 or even the 5.4 Alpha)
I am really keen to try this sail in the upper limit. Hoping to report back on that shortly.
