After taking light weight wave sails to another level last year, it is interesting to see what has changed for 2016 in the Severne Pro sail range.

Well Ben hasn't been taking it easy, plenty of changes from last season.

2015 Sails:

Super light thin films with plenty of reinforcing
Each membrane was custom built for each sail size and model. Every fibre was aligned along its exact load paths, this meant film thickness could be reduced making a lighter sail. The lightest wave sails on the market.
Full X-ply window with Spiderfibre running through the Blade Pro
Large Window= less high tech materials (espc in the smaller sails)
High tech, more expensive sails not for everyone


2016 sails

New glue used for the laminate= much better UV stability, brighter colours and slightly thicker feel to the material. (after testing 40+ glue options)
Each membrane is custom built for each sail size and model. Now more and thicker fibres are aligned along the exact load paths.
Much smaller Heavy duty mono-film window (similar to the s1Pro)
Even more reinforcing through the sail with thicker fibres
Possibly a fraction heavier than last season's, but feels bombproof
Spiderfibre not running through the window
Aero batten pockets, batten is run through the sail material to create a truly symmetrical sail
Reduced skin tension for softer feel
High tech, expensive sails not for everyone. But good value for the weight and build quality !

if you wanted a lightweight sail they should have gotten rid of the carbon. monofilm is way lighter.
might not last as long but its the pro model right?
the way I see it: carbon makes it look cool, people prefer that to a sail that is lightweight but featureless.
also where is the customary sales jargon about how they revolutionised their design from last year, even though it looks exactly that same as something from 2005...

...just saying.

Have you actually seen and used one of the pro edition models? I think your thought re monofilm usage is valid but there are couple of areas where monofilm fails:

1) Durability: if you get a small hole in a monofilm sail it will tear until it hit's either a batten or the edge of the sail. The way the reinforcements work on the S1 Pro and Blade pro is they hole will go only as far as the next reinforcement. In the case of the S1 there are reinforcements every couple of cms. Small holes are easy to fix with a small patch.

Don't get me wrong I think the Pro edition sails will tear just as easily if you put them through a wash cycle at a reef break.

2) Weight: you can make monofilm only so light before it disintegrates as soon as UV hits it. The material they use on the S1 Pro is so light it's almost feels like one of those blue ikea bags but thinner. I know this sounds terrible but the feel goes away once you rig the sail ;-)

my mate has the 2015 S1 pro 5.6m. I have the 2013 standard blade 5.5.

we swapped on a nice 18-20knot day perfectly powered up.

the pro is like cheating. It is so incredibly light. When you find yourself mid jibe with the sail in the wrong spot, you can reposition the sail so quickly. It makes sailing so much easier.

i bought the 4.8 S1 pro. Amazing.

now I have a real first world problem. i want to get the 100% carbon mast. If I get the 5.6 s1 pro, the 400 mast fits both. If I get the 5.7m blade pro it needs a 430 mast. Any opions?

Get both. It's only money.

Hey Yuppy, it's a no brainer, S1 pro. If u already have the 4.8, get the 5.6 then u have more consistency within ur quiver regarding feel and style when changing up/down + the bonus of using ur 100% on both sails. Go for it
