Quick question:
Is anyone able to give me a quick indication of how the 2015 79L starboard quad (which I am considering) compares with the 2014 82L (which I am currently riding) volumewise?

Though I am 85kg, I have been really happy with the 82L and was riding a 76L (quatro twin fin) for years before that. Would the 79L gives me similar sensations to the 82L? Am I making a mistake to stick with smallish board size and would I benefit for moving to a larger board?

For info, I use these boards in 20knts +. In lighter wind, I have a bigger wave board (90-100L).

I know it feels like cherry picking but I sometimes wonder if I have not submitted myself to the unnecessary trial of too small a board for years. Probably not an essential question but some of you might be able to share their experience.

Everyone is riding 10L bigger unless it is hell windy.
Plus the volumes are off on most boards so a 79 and 82 from different years could be the same volume or even be / feel the other way around when u actually sail them

Grab a 90 and be happy.

Dunno if it is any indication, but with modern quads I don't go to a board more than a few litres under my bodyweight until it is 25kn solid (proper 25kn min) and well overhead. I reckon you could go 85 or 90, and 100-105L in quads and be stoked for life. Under 80 is getting silly

I'm 74kg and pretty much only used my 90l RRD Hardcore Wave last summer, it handles so well, but there were quite a few occasions where I really needed something smaller, I think I'll go another RRD, choices are 76l or 84l, tempted for the smaller one.

The 2014 74l Quad was 227 x 57.5? In 2015 the volume was adjusted to 79L for the same dimensions as this was more reflective of the real displacement. So 74L is now the new 79L . This reflect marks comments above.

@zed - the previous hardcores 84 and down (V4) sailed pretty small for their size , the 91 was added later and had 'comparively' alot more tail width for its size , the 84 (& 76 more so) have a pretty narrow tail by quad standards with lots of rail tuck , so they have insane topend for their size and they sail so soft anyway with the rails / reasonable rocker etc .... so dont discount the 84 , its probably got way enough topend for you , and pwa rrd riders were using it down to 3.7 .... im 74kgs and would never use the 76 I dont think .... even in mast hi 3.7 side off ..... the newer V5 hardcores are a different kettle of fish ...

The 79L 2015 is 57.5 and that's the same width as the 74Quad 2013 and JP 83L with closely the same length.

Width plays a big role in feeling, I had some spins on some starboard in 2012-13 and they were feeling easily 5L bigger than what I was used to ride for the same L.

It seems that they did reduce the width on their quad in 2014-15 or adjust some L on their board. 82 us now 84 and the 87 is now 89...but shorter and thicker...so the 79 would feel way smaller under foot to my opinion than your 82, however to come back to the original discussion. Is 79L is too small for you. It's your feeling that count...however if you stick in starboard and it's still the same feeling as before, add at least 5L to your board volume...so at 82 you are easily at 87....Quatro or JP...and that is pretty close to what they were suggesting to have.

I've found a 2nd hand RRD 75l - but you reckon too small for me? The 90 would probably be my main board. I was sailing a 70l Evo before.

Would a 2014 Nuevo 80l be a better option?

rrd 75 ? is that a cult ? if it is it wont be too small - its got a way wider tail than the hardcore , wider max width 56cm vs hardcore 76 x 54cm , hardcores were 76 & 84 & 91 , V5 hardcores 78 & 88 ... older cults were best for side onshore stuff or sloppy sideshore ... , newer cults can mix it up a bit more sideshore

That 79 should be spot on for what you are going to use it for. I had one while was a bit over 85Kg's. As soon as I could get planing that was the board I'd use. I had a 89 litre quad as well, but hated it. The 79 was just as quick to plane, but looser and way smoother in chop. If you have a bigger board for float and ride days 79 shouldn't be too small. I still have the board, but my son keeps stealing it and uses it as his only board.
Form what I was told the 2014 74 litre was actually 79 litres and with the addition of some V and double concave became the 2015 79, so it probably is a bit smaller than your 82.

Yeah I ended up getting the 2014 76l hardcore wave. Went really well on Saturday at Lano. Loved it. Not sure how much wind it's going to need, I came off the plane a few times in the lulls.

Hi Zed if you are using the standard fins with that hardcore 76 I found them a bit small. We changed the tail fins to a set of Choco Twixx 16 fins and left the standard front fins in. Made a big difference to planning, upwind and hold turning with no downside. Those swept back fins seemed to suit it more.

Yeah using the standard ones, I think. Board was second hand so they might not be the original ones? I'll see how she goes. I was pretty impressed with the first sail. Wind was quite gusty and there was a lot more chop than normal, more consistent wind and less chop it will probably go even better. So much grip.
