Although 'softer' and 'tighter' may not seem to fit together, and Taty's request for a slightly flatter top added to that challenge, we took the logic for that and turned it into reality. The softness comes from slightly reduced total mast bend, with emphasis on the upper sections, and the tightness develops from changes to the body shaping to increase mid-leech tension.

This year the Loco has the added durability of our custom XPly™ window mesh to make it extra crash proof. The Kevlar™ structural skeleton, appropriate reinforcements, and integrated graphic elements, all add to the value and performance of this lively design.








SWITCH

Speed blasting, bump-n-jump, power tricks, even a little freestyle, all fit with the specialized design character of this six batten joy to sail. Always light for the size, Switch feels perfect for hours of total fun.

2012 Mauisails LEGEND 5.0:



From bottom turn to bottom turn with nice front rail pressure.


On the water:

The Legend is within average weight in the catergory with a profile that has a nice shape in the wind and gives enough power. It pulls enough to get off the water quickly without being too physical. The ratio softness/nervousness gives a lot of comfort and is really efficient.

The Legend is extremely quick, efficient sailing back upwind but mostly extremely easy to control when the wind kicks in. The balance and softness of the sail are mostly appreciated when the water gets messy. This makes it really efficient (whether in onshore or side shore conditions) to ride most waves and give it all while jumping due to the control in the air.

In the surf, the Legend gives only what is needed to accelerate and staying neutral at the bottom. We never feel the need to 'fight' the sail; it drives very precisely in the trajectories when the waves are powerful. We do not have the playful side of a 4 batten sail but it is overall easier with better control.

At its best: long bottom turns at speed with front rail pressure. Beyond the use in the waves, the Legend is an excellent alternative for nuclear conditions whatever board you are using. Finally, it lifts the nose of the board and frees up the board more than average sails.


Conclusion:

Soft in the hands when we sail in choppy/strong winds, easy to ride, the Legend is direct enough to seduce heavy weights. Sail that can also be used in bump & jump, it delivers stability and manoeuvrability.

2012 Mauisails Ghost XT 5.3:



Extremely light, manoeuvrability is key with minimum inertia

On the water:

Extremely light for a 5.3, the Ghost feels like a smaller size. Softer than the average sail with moderate power, it fits between the power wave and fine sails. Comfort is paramount and makes it extremely nice to sail in choppy conditions. The softness around the top of the sail and especially around the leech twist gives the board a softer ride on the water. It is one of its strong points.

The power and nervousness is less direct than with a Poison or Atlas. Performance is a little less in speed. The Ghost is very versatile and gives good pressure to sail back to the peak. Extremely light, it is very easy to place the sail wherever whenever you want with minimum inertia. In the surf the power is centred and the balance between power and staying neutral was appreciated by everyone.

Conclusion:

This high end version derived from the Legend gives a lighter and softer feel while sailing. Going from roller to roller are smoother and sailing in difficult conditions (chop, nuclear wind) even more comfortable. A very nice sail.
