I am a windsurfer from Austria (actually I am a Hobie 16 sailor and only started windsurfing a few years ago!) and have only sailed on lakes.

Currently I live in Peregian Beach and try and go windsurfing on Lake Weyba as often as work permits.

I have never surfed in the ocean and without any other windsurfers around (here in Peregian, there are only kite-surfers), I am a bit intimidated and don't know where to start.

I have seen recommendations for spots in northerly winds and will give it a try, but since currently southerly winds seem to be prevailing, I would need some recommendations for good spots to start my luck too!

I would feel even more comfortable, if I could surf somewhere, were there is at least one other windsurfer, so if anybody plans to go out on the ocean on a weekend, feel free to send me a text (0468 344 237) and I will gladly join you!

Caloundra bar aka Happy Valley.... good for beginners, make sure you sail on an incoming tide only!! There is normally a few crew there to help out when it's windy.

Thanks Davox, I've never been to Caloundra, just looked at it on Google Maps now. Where is that spot exactly and where do you go in?

A good place to start is Mooloolaba in Noreasters (at the end of the spit)
Caloundra bar is good in Southeasters but never in strong out going tide.

Try North end of Kawana beach, S bends. Nice grassy spot to rig. Good in a northerly when the waves are usually small.

Hey Flo, for spots a bit closer to Peregian the Noosa River mouth is pretty fun and safe otherwise Castaways Beach is good spot in the northerlies too. Cheers Tim

Noosa Rivermouth became my favourite spot, since I posted this. Really great for beginners, especially in an outgoing tide. Had my first experience at Mooloolaba today. Was great, but the waves were quite big, compared to everything I've seen before!

Does Castaways not work in southerly winds?

Castaways, SE not for a beginner.

As a 'wave beginner' Possibly the easiest ocean/wave spot on the coast is (SE Winds) is 'Neil St' Caloundra, this is where you will find most people wave sailing, once you nail Neil St and get to the next level, try Peregian or Coolum in SE...Castaways/Sunrise/Sunshine SE is too onshore, Ok if its Sth, all of these are hard core places, full on sweep and dumping waves....Neil St is pretty user friendly, easy to get out.

Others might say 'happy valley' is the easiest...can be.. but it quite literally has a killer tide that you need to be on guard for.

When you get good there is a couple of special spots at Coolum, but you need to be in 'just the right spot' to nail them, otherwise it's swim city and trashed gear!

If there is at any time a couple of you going wave sailing on the Sunny Coast, please let me know, I'd love to come and watch.
