Heading up for a hol next week. Are the 2 lakes back of Noosa deep enough to take 38cm fins?

Where is the best place nearby for entry level wave sailing? (experienced in plenty of bay chop)

Any other places nearby worth trying? Thanks.

depending on the swell you could go straighft off main beach , if to big sail try around Munna Point. Lake Webya and Cooriabah are pretty shallow the kites get away with it . Lake Coortharaba is deep enough and a top windsurfing spot .

There is know real entry level wave sailing area on the coast however when a Northerly blows in flattens out the surf making it pretty easy if your a competent sailor.


Dickies reef of Curramundi is pretty cool too , though its on the southern end of the coast google Anne St .

Both Lake Weyba and Lake Cootharaba are currently okay for a 38cm fin. Having said that, there are shallows around the perimeters of each lake. Here's some recent tracks of windsurfers using similar sized fins:

There's a few guys camping at Elanda Point this weekend and 1st week of the holidays. You can also launch from Boreen Point with the locals at Lake Cootharaba. Have fun!

noosa rivermouth or north shore are both wave spots in a Northerly.

i sailed the noosa mouth a few weeks back. it's quite good now. the pumping has improved it a lot but there is no more beach to rig on near the car park so you need to carry gear little way. alternatively u can rig at the dog walking beach.

Thanks guys. Almost there after a 16hr drive today. Spent the last 4 hrs looking for a motel but finally found a roudy country pub room for the night. Hopefully some sebreezes will greet me in the days ahead . Really appreciate the info.

As I'm heading up to Noosa this Thursday (yipee) this is a great thread. I plan to hit Cootharaba (and maybe the ocean) any day there's wind, so could someone tell me how deep the lake is? Is it overhead with full waterstarts or can you touch bottom in most places? Thanks in advance. Hope to meet some of the locals during my stay.

I was there today. Great spot. About chest deep once u are 100 m off sure. Should be out there next over the next fortnight. Might catch u at Boreen point

guys there are some windwanderers staying at elanda point. I wouldn't bother going there by car as the elandah point guard will charge you to enter the camp ground.

you will be able to sail upwind to get there. but to be honest in a northerly boreen is the place to be. it will be pumping from Tuesday onwards. as it will have a touch of nw in it in the mornings i'd look to the noosa bar also.

I'm very keen to sail Noosa bar. Sat in the car park there today but not quite enough wind. I assume you can only sail on an out going tide. Is that right?

my rule of thumb is only sail bars on incoming tides.

that said, if you score a true north/north westerly it will be fine on an incoming tide.

if a NE you will struggle with an incoming tide if the wind isn't pumping so then it's more likely people sail it with an outgoing tide.

how'd you guys get on at noosa wind wise.

i'm looking at coming up some time next week or this weekend and am keen to hit the bar if anyone is still around.

Will be at the bar from about midday ( Thursday). Tides are perfect & wind cross on shore.

Let you in on a little secret......
If its Nth and 'windy' not marginal.. I mean 'windy'
Sunrise Beach and Castaways Beach, even Peregian, are by far the BEST northerly bump/jump semi wave spots you can get, Not tide affected, but they do require wind, and generally between 1-4Pm as before and after the wind goes too offshore.
Low to medium tide best, Castaways on an incoming high actually has a couple of nice waves out the back, awesome jumps.

Rivermouth is a disaster for parking and you will be fighting 50 kites for space, if the tide comes in its crap, and its also full of sand bars to break your neck on!

This time of year the whales are often spotted off Castaways, great for a down winder also, just follow the waves!

in a N-NW wind? you're sure?

I'll be doing Castaways this afternoon, and possibly Wednesday if it's on again. Have had some good SE sessions there lately. There's a good left hand bank formed to the north of the car park. Apparently NW can be a bit shadowy in shore but have only sailed there in NE & SE. Tides aren't good for Noosa Bar this week.

I'll see how things pan out. If it gets some ne in it I'll prob go castaways as you guys are suggesting. I always thought coolum was pretty good in a n-ne wind. Beach road is my other option.

i find it's best on an outgoing tide as it pushes you into the northerly wind for more power.

it's over the river, gets referred to as north shore.

you go through Tewantin, catch the barge over the river ($$) and head along beach road to the beach.

north shore has some nice waves and is cross to cross off in a N-NNW wind.

if you wanted to stay a few days a bit further north is the camp ground. you don't need a 4wd to access any of those areas.

if you do have a 4wd then head south along the beach from beach road and pick the best break.

Too many options, not enuff time... Ill hit Weyba on friday if the s-e comes in.

Had an awesome session today at Noosa bar. The incoming tide didn't detract. Great spot to get a few ramps. particularly just east of rock groin. Unfortunately tore my 5.7 sail so came in early, just as two other guys were heading out. Never had any probs with parking as most swimmers go when the wind picks up. It might be difficult on weekends though. Love the place but always keen to try new places.

I dunno personally thought it was a cracker of an arvo, especially once it filled in later in the afternoon haha. Maybe its just because I haven't been out since Easter! That is until my boom snapped. Pretty disappointing to be honest, its only 4 years old and the aluminium snapped clean off at the clamp.

Pretty sure i left just as it filled in... Had some fum runs just bit up and down during my sesh. Bad luck about ur boom mate.
