My first sail at Yeppoon!

Had a great sail at Yeppoon on friday and saturday! Even a bit of wave sailing which is good for beginner wave sailors like me.

I did not expect much of Yeppoon but was blown away with 25knot SE and 15 - 20 Knot SE on Saturday

be good to see a few more people there!

Its the next level up from the train !!!

There was a lot of ramps out the back to launch it ( had no choice but too jump due to ocean swell).

Hopefully you guys are getting blessed with wind at the train!!!

Moz, yeppoon in summer is reliably windy, I think you'll get lots of sailing in there.

some of the kite dudes head further south past the harbour. go for a drive on a windy day and you'll find some great spots. you just have to get used to sailing by yourself!

main beach can get a ridable wave in the southern corner after a few days of strong breeze.

one place i always wanted to sail but never did (because I'm gutless) was the mouth of corio bay. drive out to Rydges then keep heading north. if you've got a 4x4, then just drive up the beach (permits from the service station in the middle of town, free). if not stick to the dirt and park at the very last place.

there's also a place about halfway up the beach known as "the dune" that actually gets a really good wave after a period of windy weather. go and have a chat to the local board maker in the industrial estate and he'll set you straight.

I have had the word about sailing at the mouth there ! ( been told there are some water lizards there) .

Have spoken to a few about where to go but i will take the advice you gave me and speak to the local board maker too.

If you go out there one day you might see a familiar board you might know out there ( the orange Drops wave board!!!) .

That's great. Sounds like it could be good up there. Do you have to worry about stingers?

from what i been told stingers are rare.

The water colour isn't flash but who cares when your planing or in the air!

I was out on Friday, Sat & Sunday, although only sailed round to the main beach from Lammermoor Fri and sunday. What board / sail were you on?

If you're thinking of Corio give Andrew Fee a call on 0413565430. He's our local gun who regularly sails up there.

Also you may want to adjust the wind speed for friday down a little - whilst BOM max gust read 25kn, average was only approx 17kn. It does seem windier than BOM readings for SE at times though.

BTW - the colour of the water is "Yeppoon Blue" (you can mix up some of your own if you have a tin of milo and some milk)

Moz, did you get posted up there? I can think of worse places to be! have fun on the old Drops, she loves that stuff. the foam tail actually works in those conditions!

the clubbies say that stingers are only an issue on flat days. I worked on the beach for three years there and never saw/heard of one. We closed the beach about three times in that period if one popped up in a net.

getting close to xmas so you will probably see sausage soon sailing in his santa outfit handing out lollies to little kids, always good for a laugh. I think his brother may now have the gig using a jetski.

Definately try and do a trip to the islands and take the kit, water doesnt get any clearer than out there! apart from the Solomons that is. Enjoy the sailing!

Hey, im 16 and would like to get into wind surfing, i live in yeppoon, and attend yeppoon state high school. i was wandering, if anyone arround here would know of where i could get a entry level board and sail and any other gear i may need, for ~$300.

any tips for beginners, suggest reading ect. would be greatly appreciated.

When i am out sailing at Yeppoon, i am more than happy to give advice for your first board or what not to do as a beginner !

I don't want a newbie to make tha same mistakes as me when i first started!

would you know where i could get a reasonable cheap board from. i want to see if ican do it, and how much i like it before throw in too much money.

I think the buy and sell off seabreeze is the best of all places to be looking.

If not then the courier mail on a saturday allways have the odd bargfain sailboard for about $100.

my question is, do either of those include a mast/ boom, any of the other bits and pieces that i would need?

it all depends on your size/weight for what you will need. As a beginner you will need a biggish sort of board that is stable an gear that isn't cut throat technology.

A lot of components in windsurfing get very technical and is way above what i understand of it.

As for the gear you referred too - its a bit out of a beginners range in my opinion. Anything that is WINDACTION brand on it you should not even look at!!!

this gear is too old and hard to get going on as a beginner!

i know you have a budget but saving up for a descent & suitable board would be the better thing to do, i can tell you from experience!!!

I managed to teach myself out at the causeway about 20 years ago! would highly recommend it as a spot to get the initial hang of it!

I feel for you as it is not a cheap sport. You should be able to pick up some beginners gear pretty cheap. Try sausage he's a tight arse and wont have thrown anything away after 20 years in the sport. I bet hes got a huge secret stash under his house!

well, my budget is $300. so it is REALLY right, if i do it for 2 months, and i really enjoy it, then i will invest in some real gear.

Hey ironized, it's worth checking the dump if you're ever there. I know a couple of guys from work up here in Mackay who have been to dump stuff and found an old longboard they took home for their kids to play on.

Emu Park is good to sail in SE (or cyclone) for that matter but haven't sailed there for a very long time - unless leaving from there to sail to keppel.

NE blowing like crazy here today, but since my son swallowed a 10cent coin at 9 o'clock this morning, which got lodged half way down his eosophegas (spelling), I am sitting at home minding the other 2 instead. Doctor only just operated and got the thing out. I suppose it's time I buy them a money box.

I used to live at Yeppoon on Lammamore Beach. It was ok sailing there although very on shore and messy in a strong northerly and gusty (but flat) in the SE'erlies. I remember the main beach being pretty good when the wind was up. Some nice ramps once off the beach.

I would still be on the look out for stingers in summer though. I think You would have to be unkucky in anything over 10knots but the consequences are pretty grim.

I just can't wait till my 3 year old does something like swallow a 10 cent piece. That just sounds like a great day. I am looking to get him a kids rig this xmas
