What is that noise from parts of the road on the way out to Wello point ?

First time I heard it I checked my tyres. Sounds a bit like running over heaps of blue bottles on the beach...

Yes...A bit like popping bubble wrap with a car...It's like there's bamboo matting under the surface in certain bits.

Been baffling me for ages, if you drive to the left a little it doesn't happen, must be great for the people that live there.

I think you will find it is an early sign that the road surface is breaking up.
I hear it when cycling.
