Just checked out the Wello bank for the first SWester for the year the bank is very low so sailing behind the bank will be hard this year at this stage there is very little sand height so flat water will be hard to find. This picture was taken at 1.30 Thursday 1.5.14 so by Sat it will be too shallow by about 3pm as the tide heights will be lower. If you look at my photo the rubble near the island is close to the height of the sand bar. Sand in close to the shore area is silted up also.

Thanks for info Glynn. I'm about to come with Curt on Sat. I might need some guidance as I was there only once and it was on the westerly side.

Thanks Glynn, planning on getting out there really early. I'm hoping the wind direction will be right for the Eastern side of the sand bar around high tide. Last couple of years have been magic
Here's a teaser when it all came together in 2012

Glynn, what's that silted sand like for carrying your gear barefoot on a cold windy day?

the words death of a thousand cuts rings loud in my ears.

you never know just how bad it is until you're nice and warm on the couch that night and it occurs to you your feet are hurting like hell.

Soft! I rarely get cuts on either side (touch wood), the sharpest bits on western side is up near the island or at curve in bank- both have oyster shell exposed.

Close to shore is sandy as Mark said near the island is bad so

don't put your feet down hard if getting off.

Simon enjoys both, I think it was said in jest cap'n. Sailing in the chop beats sitting around all day waiting for the bank to be right (especially if you don't get to sail everyday).

Got too sail Wello bank shallow side used a 21 deep fin I didn't touch once on the runs but starting up I was scrapping the bottom fin needs a clean up she is scratched up a bit dam it. By the time the bank was out it was too shallow I really took a chance but paid off with some 37kt runs. Water never really got flat & I was coming over the back of the chop on the bare offs but had no crashes gear was very solid on the water the BP SW 28 is amazingly grippy for such a sort fin gives good lift as well. Thanks for the advice to buy this size Brad.

Your profile photo is too scary & a turn off if that's how to dress for kiting.
The kites were having fun yest as they can get in real shallow flat water you lot should get some speed gear & a GPS & show us how fast you are or are not?
