We are planning a trip to central Qld coast in June/July to warm up & a friend forwarded this. www.abc.net.au/news/2021-06-03/crocodile-sighting-yeppoon/100188632?utm_campaign=news-article-share-control&utm_content=mail&utm_medium=content_shared&utm_source=abc_news_web

Does this make off the beach sailing at Yeppoon not recommended? Where would you recommended?

7News article on the sighting:

I raced longboards at Yeppoon SC in the '80s as well as doing the 'Keppel Crippler' windsurfing marathons which started from Emu park.
Farnborough beach is a bit further north from Yeppoon. I checked it out a few times for wave sailing as it seems to get more swell in a SE wind. It always felt a bit 'sharky' to me, but crocks never crossed my mind in those days.

A quick google returns a few reports of croc sightings in the region in recent years:

I also vaguely recall a story about crocs being washed out of the local croc farm in the 2010 floods...

Snags/Sausage should fill you in here about Yeppoon. Yeppoon is an awesome spot for windsurfing. As per the channel 7 report - yes there are crocs! There are crocs from the Sandy Straights/Maryborough upwards north

I'd still kite Yeppoon, but stay away from water's edge at night

Yeppoon Main Beach near the sailing club is a great spot to sail. Crocs would only be an issue if you are fishing up the back of mangrove creeks in the area. The bigger issue will be wind in Jun/Jul with the winter trade winds being better from Bowen north to Cairns.

We had a great trip with mixed weather (hail, cool temps, storms &fog) but but there wasn't much breeze anywhere in Qld unless you were at Green Island. The KBSC locals (who were very friendly) said come back in spring if you want breeze. The beach croc was an unusual occurrence & they get bluebottles & jellies but not box jellyfish or irukandji.
We will go further north next year. I think the windsurfer regatta at Bowen had only light winds rather than SE trades.
