Thought I might start a thread dedicated to Longboards, anything with a centreboard. Raceboards, Wallies, D2's, Hybrids etc. Still a good interest in these versatile boards. It would good to post all things longboard in Qld, racing, cruising, passage sailing, new gear, restoring old gear, modifications, sails etc etc etc.

So to start it off

On Easter Monday I went for a cruise by myself in very light winds from Manly over to King Isl, was nice to have some time with just my own thoughts but on the way I ran into a group of Dugongs feeeding so I laid the sail down an watched them for 5 or 10 minutes, the week before I sailed around Green Isl and we ran into a group of Dolphins or Sharks or both (not sure) chasing a school of fish, its great to see marinelife and its something you tend to miss when your just going fast.

Would be good to do more of this type of sailing over winter as the winds tend to be lighter and the water clearer. Anybody interested in starting off some cruising by joining me on a lap around Green Island sometime in the next few weeks when conditions are suitable. Or suggest a good place to go for a cruise, be good to sail at different locations.

Sounds great. I'm not familiar with the bayside sailing, and it would be good to tap into some local knowledge.

This time of year is great in that the water clears up and gliding over the sand out front of Brighton always turns up plenty of rays, sand grabs and the occasional dolphin. Funny how many dolphins come in close along the Brighton Sandgate foreshore feeding in groups, so many that I have been swimming and on many occasions had Dolphins come up and swim around me for a few minutes.
My brother does drone videos of a rock reef off Brighton and every thing from Taylor, Turtles, Tiger Squid, Mack / longtail tuna can be seen regularly close to shore but looking out over the water looks like nothings there.
I agree in just cruising along on the LT in a 5-10 not breeze and just looking for marine life is just a great way to spend a day this time of year. Would love to do Moreton around the Sandhills on a full tide over the sand and sea grass to see what's around. I will be doing Redcliffe this winter from Woody Point going along all the reefs at high tide in light winds as I have been told by a few Sups that its has some good marine life.

Nice to see some kindred spirits here. When my F2 world cup went a bit soft I was lucky to buy one of the rare Mistral PanAm boards in oz. With a Severne 8.5 it reminds me of how special a raceboard is slicing upwind and ripping downwind. I never took a liking to the formula boards, their appearance was a signal to stop destroying my body and go back to boats for a while.
Cootharaba and Wivenhoe or Samsonvale (when allowed) are the special places, but back to Shorncliffe and Queens Beach lately with the local rule.
And the shallow water puddleboard is still being developed....

Nice board, two boards I would love to have in my stable are a Mistral Pan Am and the F2 380. Wanna swap a Phantom for the Pan Am.

Noooo, ya canna have ma Pan am!

I have to admit liking the F2 on the water more above 15 knots, just a friendlier board, and both F2 and the Pan Am are made a lot better than the Phantom imho. Later Phantom is faster but lost interest in them when I saw how easily the single layer of glass gets dinged.

Am also envious of your Pan Am and agree with your assessment of the Phantom (and Formula ).
I have been racing and cruising both my F2 Lightning WCE and 2016 Phantom actively for the last few years,
While the Phantom excels in medium winds, I prefer my F2 overall for all winds strengths and conditions.

You should bring the Pan Am to the Raceboard State Titles at Lake Cootharaba. They are usually held on Mayday weekend, but may need to be postponed this year because of the lock down.

Avg speed of 2.1kn is way too slow for raceboard even in displacement mode
How is cadence measured for windsurfing?

Haha, I was wondering the exact same thing. I'musing my Garmin so I guess it's measured through my watch when I shake the rig up

Bugger, I would like to get my hands on that board.

Where are the pics from, are they Wivenhoe, is it good there in a big winter westerley, I have never sailed out there, where is a good place to launch, I think that might be a good place for a winter longboard get together for something different..

That's sounds good, I would be keen to join you cruising all the reefs looking at marine life

Yes the sailing pics are Wivenhoe where we camp a week at a time while retirement was unfettered by the virus. On the edge of lake was Samsonvale where membership is cheaper than a shout in a pub (in the day) and in the huge blows on the bay you can sail in 5 or more knots less on a flat lake. Simon was there one year with us for BIG MONDAY when we had all the camping gear packed to go to Cootharaba but the road in was flooded. It was 40 in the bay so a group of us hit Samsonvale and dodged trees and animals in the flood waters. My weapon was a Speed 125 with a 4.0 Wild Winds in overpowered mode.

But back to the raceboard at Shorncliffe where they did not let me enter the vintage yacht regatta, but did take some pics. Yes, mast is too flexy for the sail, anyone want to swap me a Slake 520 for a Speed Proam including 4 fins?

Queensland Raceboard Championship will not be on at Lake Cootharaba for May long weekend this year.
As soon as it is possible to hold something I can let you know and see if there is interest.

Saturday is looking good for a Sail, I am going to go for a lap of Green Island on my Raceboard, launching from the beach at the eastern end of Davenport Drive Manly at 10.30am (high tide).

Imax and myself did a longboard half marathon today from Beachmere over to Sandstone and back cruising the sandbanks. He was on his raceboard with a whopper 9.4m sail and I was on the mighty BIC windSUP with a 6.5m sail. Beautiful clean water and 5-10kn winds so we could see the resident dugong, heaps of turtles and plenty of rays as well. It was leg 1 of the Beachmere surf'n'turf for me, leg 2 (turf leg) will be in the morning when I'll hit the motocross track because there'll be no wind

I've never sailed the reservoirs. I assumed they would be gusty and awful but those photos look inviting.
Is that Wivenhoe? Have you tried Lake Manchester?

Thanks, I didn't realised you were talking about Windsurfer One Design. I was looking for a Mistral One Design. After having sailed them for 4 years everyday, my brain can only see Mistral when there is One design written

Something I can highly recommend for lightwind cruising over the sand banks on your longboard is a pair of polarised sunnies to let you see all the monsters of the shallows. There's heaps of marine life out there and a nice cruisey longboard is a top way to sneak up on it

I think I saw you, what a glamour day. We were sailing our tri back with red and white kite from gold coast to Shorncliffe.

Yeah it was a glamour day to be on the bay, the wind was light but pretty nice for a cruise. Water temp was perfect and it was super clear gliding over reef flats behind green.

That would have been a fun cruise cammd. It's perfect log riding conditions out there at the moment, sunny, with flat and clear water and light winds. I might have to talk Imax into another half marathon this week
