We got thru OK, fair bit of tree damage and a bit of roof damage around town, but I tell you I have never seen the people in town so nervous with the next one comeing, So many talking about running away, but were do you go, this next bastard is half the size of QLD.

Keeping warm alright,the wetsuit was a good buy but next time I will have a smaller sail than the 4.7 was out the other day when a 100kg+ guy came back in on a 4.5 and said he was overpowered.Batten down and all the best.

Your on the money there Gesty. I've found and siliconed all the window leaks now thanks to Anthony but I'm not hanging around here if Yasi wants to visit close to Mackay. Maybe a couple of days at Burrum would be nice!!

It has that "big one" sort of air about it. Yasi even sounds mean and nasty. Reminiscent of Hamish (Cat 5) in 2009 which played roulette down the coastline but thankfully never crossed.

I just approved leave for a work colleage in Proserpine who is going to Sydney or Brisbane. Normally he rides the cyclones out in a shipping container on his acreage but not this time.

NERVOUS times ahead, Must say i am somewhat relieved its heading in north of here, Boys in Cairns need to hold tight or run fast,
We will still cop a far bit here, Hopefully no more than what we got Anthony. Waiting for the daughter and grandy to get here from T'vlle. At least here we wont have to worry about them.

Well that wasn't a lot of fun last night, bugger all sleep, lots of noise,no power.
Bowen is a bit of a mess, lots of tree damage, fence damage and minor structual.
From readings around the place I would say it blew 60-70knts here, over 70 in Townsvile, around the 50 in Cairns, whos knows what mission beach got,
From media reports prior it should be 140knts plus considering that is the centre of this supposdly cat 5 with wind strength up to 300km at the centre.
I was a bit dubious of the whole 300 thing as no readings I saw last night have come close to this.
Surley it wouldn't of been over dramatised

I have to agree with you on being sceptical - there is nothing to indicate it was any greater than a Cat 4 although there are no wind readings from Cardwell, Innisfail and Sth Johnstone. I just hope the authorities didn't call Wolf on this just to manage us sheep a little easier. I think Flinders reef only had a max gust of 90kn and the eye went within 50km of it although Lucinda did record a 100kn gust which was approx 70kms away from where it hit land.

Irrespective it was still a cyclone and it appears Nth Qld may have dodged a bullet.

Good to see everyone is safe and most property sound.
Looking at the telly, there does not seem to be much more damage than a typical Brisso spring storm, though they have not shown downtown Tully, which is apparently much more damaged. Tough buggers up north !!
Looks like the Qld Building Code held up after all, for which I am very glad.
It's a expensive pain when you are building, but nice to have the structural strength on nights like last night.

Hey Nigel. I would say all is good in t'vlle, prob a bit worse than here, Optus comms are down so we have no phone, telstra is still going, hence my internet still working.

Overall Im pretty releived with the result,

Yes family are ok including dog,house is fine but a monster palm tree swiming in the pool so we got off lightly I think.

i was sceptical also looking at some of the weather stations but lucinda was reading around 100 knots so i figure tully/cardwell would have gotten more than that.

i think the saving grace was that the storm surge wasn't as bad as expected and the cyclone didn't im[act highly populated areas.

i've been looking around online to try and figure this one out. i found an image of yasi when it was north of flinders and it appears that it may have been going through eye wall replacement which may account for the lower wind reading.


i did some more digging and have it hitting the coasts with sustained winds around 120 knots-224km/hr and gusts potentially up to 165 knots-305km/hr which is well into cat5. seems to have hit at midnight and then dropped to cat4 fairly quickly.

I decided to get out of Innisfail as soon as it went to Cat 5 and advice from a friend in the BoM advised getting out as the storm surge predictions were frightening if the eye passed over Innisfail. As I live in a ground level house close to the river didn't take much to make the decision to leave.
Went to friend in Malanda even though we wwere still going to get hit, at least we wouldn't drown up there.
Luckily the eye deviated to the south enough to not cause too much damage were we were, lots of trees down but that's about all.
The trip back to Innisfail on the Palmerston Hwy was exciting. Power line over the road at Milla Milla but not active thank god, but when we got to the rain forest the hwy was blocked by hundreds of trees. As the traffic built there were a few who had chainsaws, so we leap-frogged each other down the mountain, cutting and clearing a path. Apart from one stuck up prick in a range rover &x28; rego REWARD&x29; who sat in his car with the aircon on waiting for everyone else to clear the way. Pox on you DH. Everyone else were fantastic helping clear the way. Usually an hour trip took over 4.
Was expecting Innisfail to have heaps of damage but no. Lots of trees down but relatively unscathed. When we got to our house, it was just as we had left it. Bit of water got in through the louvers that's it.
Still had phones but no power. The Ergon guys had us connected again by 5pm. Fantastic effort. Innisfail &x28;and more so Cairns&x29; ducked a big bullet for sure, as the eye deviated to the south just before landfall. My favourite sailing beach, Kurrimine, got hammered and hope to get down there in the next few days to check out the damage there. Most of the small coastal communities were evacuated beforehand which would be a major reason for the amazing survival and injury rate.
